Hi All

Anyone had the "Hot Start" issue with their bikes. It started about 4 weeks back up Newcastle, stopped for fuel on a hot day, paid for fuel, got back on the bike, hit the starter and slow crank like battery was flat, leave a couple of minutes and tried again and it started. Thought this was just a one off as it didn't happen again.

Two weeks ago I was heading for Hull for the ferry to Holland for the MotoGP, very warm day and bike running at around 105 dig through traffic, stopped for fuel and again wouldn't start (que much ribbing from Jap bike mates). Wait for few minutes and started ok. Did it again at the ferry terminal.

On my return I went to Motech in Newcastle where the bike was purchased, as soon as I had pulled up I showed Mark from Motech the fault (it wouldn't start for him so that was perfect).

He plugged in diagnostic and did a couple of checks and said he thought starter motor (while I was there I showed him the headlights full of condensation which he photographed and will raise a warranty claim).

The bike was bought new from them, it has just over 1500 miles on the clock and so far it's been great.

I've read stories on other forums about + and - battery leads breaking down under heat and heavy load and people suggesting upgrade kits but the bike is still under warranty and no way I'm forking out to repair this out of my own pocket.

Cheers

Stu

Thought I had this issue one day after stopping for fuel but turned out the battery wasn't quite up to it , it turned over but didn't fire and then the battery went flat after a few attempts .
Got the bike to a guy near me and it turned out one cell had gone down on the battery , popped a new one in and haven't had the problem again , might be worth checking yours , maybe a bad batch of batteries went out !!!
But im a builder and not a mechanic so I wouldn't listen to a word I say ......

You do have a point, I am a mechanic and it could be battery or indeed starter pulling battery down. But it's less than a year old and under warranty so they can sort it out. Coming from Ducati who's warranty procedure was swift and dealer support was good I'm getting a bit concerned

I get the same prob mate, hate stopping anywhere unless it's for over an hour, filling up with gas is a hit and miss affair...I love this bike but it's unreliable starting pisses me off big time!

hot start issue not covered, ive done the mod, heavy duty cables from halfords cost me £20 sqiuds, an hours work, no more hot start, doesnt cure the rattle, thats another storie not covered under warrenty

This problem is all over the AF1 Aprilia forum looks like its the starters ...but i agree the battery cables are too thin.....what cables did you replace baby twin, did you just replace the -negitive-- one.i noticed yesterday hot start....i like to start in first/clutch pulled in..it did lag a bit then start up. Yeah we all got the rattle at start up, timing chain tensioner pumping up with oil...

Not been affected by the hot start issue yet, but I had to replace my battery last month. 2013 bike with only 4k miles on the clock.

Battery is properly maintained over the winter, so by far the worst battery I've had on a bike to date.

i did neg to earth and to starter solinoid, jumps into life after getting hot then stopping for say fuel or chocolates, mmmmmmm chocolates!!

starter defo not problem, ill replace the starter one and report back!

Thats a long ground cable did you keep the lengths of both..
Thanks

yeah,

i see your in america, just visit your local marine shop for the cables and ends, should be easy from there!

Just replaced my Yuasa with another Yuasa, starting Ok now...even hot, not sure for how long though.

Just had the same tonight think it's the battery had to buy some jump leads in the garage tried jumping it from my mates new tuono no go got a car driver too give me a jump bang fired straight up !! Got home and it fired up on its own power . But had just ridden 40 miles home at 80+ So must have had a good charge but the previous owner had kept it on an optimate all the time :thumbdown might get a lithium one because I'll be going back too jap otherwise :bawling

Aprilia may be scrimping on cable weight rather than cable cost. Any kilo they can shave off the total weight of the bike is seen as a plus.

I upgraded my battery to a lithium one. So far so good no more hot start issues and saves alot of weight. :thumbup

Was thinking about a Lithium Shorai for mine, battery was nearly NZ$300 + the cost of a Lithium safe Trickle Charger, it was way cheaper to stick with Yuasa, might reconsider if this one fuks out.
