gearing

I'm still on standard gearing on my rsv, was wondering what I should move down, was thinking to leave front sprocket standard and go up around 4 teeth on rear? what gearing are you folks using?

I'm thinking of doing 'the' gearing mod, whilst replacing chain/sprockets, if i go with 16/42 what chain will i need ? and how big a change would this make to gearing ? as i do commute on it so don't want to knock mpg to much!
