Bike is an 03 RSV. Rode home from work yesterday and all was fine but when i tried to start the bike this morning fuel pump primed, i turned it over a few times but didn't fire. i waited a moment then tried again for approx 3 seconds each time (normally it starts after a about a second on the first attempt) Still didn't fire!

Then i noticed a small amount of smoke coming out from under the tank (i have an EVO airbox though so it came up from the stacks)

I left the bike on the optimate as normal for the afternoon and just tried again to start it there now. Fuel pump primed and i turned it over for 3 bursts of 3 seconds but no firing. I DID HOWEVER hear a clicking from somewhere around the front end. Quiet like a relay clicking and it made the click rythmically every crank or so. Any ideas before i start investigating as i dont habe much time this weekend and need her going for monday?

Oh and no diag codes shown.

Cheers y'all

As is so common at this time of year due to the cold weather killing batteries, check your battery and starter solenoid, it's the most common fault on RSV. Even though it's correctly hooked up to an optimate at all times, the battery can still decide to give up the ghost.

Is a starter solenoid the same as starter relay? Can't find anything about a starter solenoid in the haynes manual. Do u have a picture of the part and where is it located on the mille?

Loads of posts today about starting problems, must be a cold snap.
Just fitted a bigger battery (WestCo YTX14-BS) to mine and have to say it cranks much better than previously. :thumbup
I've often found with mine that if it doesn't catch first time it can be a bugger to start (flooding?). As a last resort, turn the fast idle off & wind on a load of throttle when you crank it. Get ready to get off the throttle once it catches though to avoid spragging it. This has always worked for me in the past.

Starter solenoid is just behind the battery under the riders seat.

Rolber, as swoodwar states, the starter solenoid sits behind the battery, it looks like this

If the bike fails to turn over and if the battery is 100% ok, then to test the starter solenoid, switch the ignition on and very carefully bridge the two terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver or similar. You'll see a few sparks but don't worry. If the bike turns over ( do not start the bike though ) then the fault is with the solenoid. Replace with an uprated Yamaha starter solenoid, part number 4KD81940-00, about £29 from any yamaha dealer

I have two batteries YTX12-BS. One Yuasa and one Exide, The Yuasa is 6 months old and the Exide is 2 weeks. None will make my starter motor even turn over. I hope another starter will solve my problems, did get a used from af1 racing for $300, a new is over $600 + taxes and shipping cost :rant

Are you sure it's your starter motor that's at fault? Have you had it tested and found to be at faulty? I've never heard of one failing before.

As you've read alot about on this forum, non start on RSV is usually either down to battery or starter solenoid.

At that cost I think the starter motor replacement would be the last resort.

Like others have said, can't remember the last time I heard of a starter motor going down.

When your cranking with your new battery fully charged, does it make a metallic clatter noise from the lower nearside engine area?

No..u just here the starter motor trying to crank the engine but it can not turn it over like it is to weak to do the job.

i got this..is that the one?

When you connect your optimate, do you turn the power off first, and then on when connected :dunno it wont start the charging cycle otherwise..sounds like a flat battery to me..

Not to moan but could rolber start a new post regarding the battery/solenoid stuff.

Oh and i have the yam solenoid and also surely it wouldn't turn over if it was the probelm?

I have checked all the fuses and relays too. I'll pull a plug this morning and check that

That click you are hearing could be your injectors, the puff of smoke concerns me, although it could just be as a result of the failure to fire.

Did it smell fuel like or more like a plastic bag burn smell?

Have you got an alarm fitted? If yes is it disarming correctly?

Seeing as it has suddenly died, have you checked all the fuses are OK before ripping parts off the engine?

First stage of diagnosis must always be the hand and eye checks. Look around the bike systematically for things that could be loose or in a failed state. During this stage I tend to pull apart the electrical connectors and check the pins for any signs of corrosion, arcing, displacement etc....

Always pull the fuses out to confirm they are OK, you could miss a hairline crack if you view them in situ.

Let us know how you get on.

I think this thread hijack lark is getting more frequent on here now, wish people wouldn't do this as it causes a lot of confusion.

R896neo, my guess it's simply flooded due to a low or faulty battery not turning the bike over quick enough. Sort the battery out then if it doesn't start normally, hold the throttle wide open and hit the starter button, try a few times but be ready to shut the throttle when it fires.

Thanks guys for the replies. I think as ever the master LEGS is right. I checked everything over well but i reckon it was just flooded due to low battery output not turning over quick enough as legs mentioned. It didn't reset the clocks though so it wasn't totally shagged. I left it on the optimate all night and it started first time. I also treated her to a new Bosch battery rather than the crap pattern one that was in it.

The r896neo is an old reg of my first bike and is useful for user names etc as its not usually taken already. Oh and i'm lovingly sentimental.

Lastly what is the best procedure for filing and charging new battery, fill then optimate overnight?
