Over the last 3 days I've tried to start her a few times each day and the results are always the same. The last time I ran her was about 3 weeks ago and she started on the second attempt, going on to run beautifully for a quick half hour ride. I've had the battery on trickle charge the whole time since. Is it just because it's so bloomin' cold? Do I need a new battery (about 18 months old I think)? Is the charger not working properly (says "maintain" and battery condition "strong")? Do I have an electrical problem, or something more serious?

I'm not planning on taking for a ride again until it starts warming up again next year but I just want to know that she'll work when I want her to. Ahh, these fickle Italian supermodels! :devious

Heard that many a time ! Almost certainly the battery !

Maybe its got some damaged cells, try jumping it off a car if you want to be certain, but it sounds like its just lacking the omph to turn the starter quick enough...

Try using a ytx14bs next time

Okay, thanks guys. I was hoping it would be nothing more sinister than that. They don't half eat batteries though don't they?! This will be the 3rd new battery in 6 years and I keep it religiously on trickle-charge when the bike is not used for more than a couple of days.

Had the same problems. Changed the battery and starter relay, it was fine for a couple of months then did it again. I then put an extra earth cable from the battery negative to the frame and it has been fine since March.

I stuck a fresh Motobatt MBTX12U in last night and she burbled undramatically into life on the second push of the starter. I was expecting at least a couple of bangs and snots of flame like an angry dragon! :cool3

I need to have a bit more of a fiddle because the battery is not quite fitting in there snugly enough to get the seat back on and I should probably put some thread lock on the terminal posts too. The bracket that holds the tip sensor also doesn't fit on quite as it did with the standard battery because there's no indentation between the terminals, so the bracket is angled back slightly.

I've heard good things about these batteries, so I hope it's worth the tiny bit of added hassle to fit it...

You don't need thread lock on battery connections.
Besides, one day you might need to get it off in a real hurry ;)
If it has a tendency to come loose, use a star washer (up against the lead).

You're right, not for the wired connections chap, these type of batteries have separate posts that you need to screw in to the top of the battery first. That's what the thread lock's for.
