Bit of a rhetorical question, but I'm seriously thinking of chopping the gen 2 in for something else, (well, once I've put a new cheap chinese stator in it). Despite the bitter taste of unreliability and expensive repairs that Tuono ownership brings I'm thinking, money permitting, of upgrading to a v4.
Now the thing is, I almost certainly can't afford an 1100, but is it worth me waiting until I can? or will the 1000 be a good upgrade? And what should I be checking?
I know its a personal thing, I have really enjoyed the vtwin experience, but I'm looking at another grand to fix the stator properly, and I can't help thinking that would be better spent on a bike upgrade.
Let the ******** commence:thumbup

why don`t you keep the one you have and get it sorted properly ? You`ll get to know it inside out and probably be the cheaper option.

I have given that a lot of thought, but with my current circumstance, which I won't bore you with, its easier to stick a cheap stator in it and chop it in against something newer/more reliable and pay for it monthly than it is to find a spare grand tucked down the back of the sofa

hi sheep , I too share your dilemma . I have had a great 7 years aboard my tuono but I now feel ready for a change !!

I have very recently bought an early fireblade in almost immaculate condition but this is an investment buy !! which I intend to keep a few year then sell on .

I don't really want to put it on the road and ride it ,my body build ( gut ) interferes with the tank !!:lol and I don't think my aching joints will do to well riding a race rep anymore ..

any way back to the point , I too have been looking at alternatives and have arrived at the conclusion that I need a bmw s1000r in my life , it can be equipped with a comfort seat and bar rizer kit to make it more comfy to ride than the tuono .

I will miss the big v twin ness of the t but an itch is an itch !!

and like you say newer and dare I say it more reliable !! not that ive had too many isues with the tuono .

happy hunting !!

Funnily enough I looked at the s1000r, theres a really good pcp deal on them at the minute, only about a tenner a month more than an mt09 which is nuts. but i've ridden an 1100 tuono and it is a really good bike, and I really wondered if a 1000 v4 would be worth considering

Sheep

Not ridden a 1000 v4 so cant really tell you if its any worse than the 1100, I would look at a 2014 1000 as there was the cam shaft issues with early ones.

Hilift.... I took a s1000r out for a test ride... had it booked for the day as a mate was on the XR .... which he bought.
Anyway.... after 2 hours I wanted to take it back. Great motor for a il4... but so bloody uncomfortable for me.
Maybe risers would help but... hey ho.

SHEEP T4 1000 does seem to have had some issues, (gearbox / cams.... ) for me I would hang fire for the 1100... from what I have seen seems to have fewer issues.

Gen 2 T...for less than £200 it will "probably" get you 12k miles to the next stator...

Just my 2p.

Useful info on the BM, Thanks for that, explains why the pcp deal is a s good as it is.
Re the 1000/1100 is it maybe that the 11 is newer, and hasn't had the time to show any real issues?

Gen2 Stator was £38 this time from China, the oil cost more.
I reckon I got about 1k miles from the last one, so if this one lasts that long I guess it'll see out the summer which gives me the winter to look down the back of the sofa for some spare cash.
The thing is I really want a bike to ride not to fix (I've got an old zxr750 that currently fulfils that role) And I'm not overkeen on taking a bike out wondering if its going to get me home by itself or if I need a very nice man to recover me.
I gues what it comes down to is do I want to spend a grand on a 10 year old bike, just to keep it running, or do I spend that on finance on a newer bike that (should) have less issues?

I took my T out yesterday 100 mile ride out and towards the end after being parked in full sun for 2 hours mine was stalling whilst waiting at jnc s

this is exactly the first symptoms of a fooked stator or in the process of breaking down that I encountered last time .

so we could be in the same boat dude !!!!

Yeah same here, go down the box aproaching a junction and it would cut out, and the last time I rode it it just didn't feel right, brought it home and put the meter on it and it wasn't charging. I put the new stator in last week (took ages to come from China) I've only managed a quick 30 mile blast so far, but weather permitting I'll blast across Exmoor tomorrow, and we'll see how it goes.
Thing is if I spend on the proper repair I've still only got a 3 grand bike, but its hit my pocket for a lot more, what with the fuel pump last year, 2 cheap stators, a wheel speed sensor etc, etc. Whereas if I chop it in, as long as its running I should see around 2k, so in my mind I'm better off spending that money on a different bike

totally agree !! not a good feeling going out for a blast and not knowing whether youre gonna make it home !!

will check the charging status tonight !! I bought a " topdon " battery load tester a couple of month ago and to my mind it I £ 35 well spent ,

easy to check the charging circuit !!

Hi sheep ,I went from a gen 2 to a 2011 v4 which did 11k traded it for a 2014 v4 did 5k lots of trackdays not one problem not the most comfortable but a brilliant bike, now got 2009 factory which is a cracking bike, but my knees have had it so I’m thinking of selling it and retiring ,had a Bmw don’t think you would buy one over a v4,good luck which ever way you go.

I just sold my s1000r 2016 plate to release some cash and bought a 2011 Tuono V4 APRC with all the major work and issues they had, sorted. Hope I made a wise choice.

I loved my s1000r but I always thought the electronic suspension was a bit gimmickie and could have been so much better with a fully adjustable set up. I fell right into the weight range for it as well.

Get my Tuono tomorrow and can't wait for the weather to improve.

2014 is the last 1000 v4 before they update the engine to 1100. It has bigger tanks but still using sachs suspension. I've only owned one for 10000kms and so far the only issue I had was the fuel filter was dirty. Interestingly the dealer said they cleaned it and until now there's no more problem. The only problem is controlling my right hand :p

I rode the BMW & found it to be a high rev bike with no character, the 1100 V4 Tuono is amazing, the engine, handling and sound all together, wow it’s intoxicating
