yep not to sure what happened there...either blow out or wheel failure. My buddy was following and got showered in bits of rim and nearly ran me over but he couldn't tell what happened.
 
Dude you axle is in round the wrong way !!, but none the less that is some proper scary failure.
 
Yep nut to the RHS - heard of bearings going when rear over-torqued but that is freaky!
 
**** really... haven't touched the rear end on this one yet...been sorting sprag issues and what not... well it defiantly pays to go through the entire bike.. lesson learned.. although I haven't experienced any issues with vibes or any wayward handling. Earlier that day I did 300 miles round wales including the black mountain pass 7 times...pretty happy it didn't happen then ; )
 
Never seen a rim fall to bits like that before, I wonder if it's been straightened in the past which could have weakened it.

I've also heard it can damage the rear bearings & they only need to be tightened to 100nm instead of the recommended 120nm

Dammit mine's round the wrong way as well. Just looked at some old photos of the bike and at some time I must have put it back together the wrong way round but what's confusing is that in the Haynes manual the nut is on the RHS but in the genuine Aprilia RSVR manual the nut is on the LHS

Does it matter if the spindle is in the wrong way round :dunno
