hi
the tuono will be wanting an oil change soon , the book says 15/50w. will it be ok to put 10/40w like me jap bikes. cheers:dunno

G'day Nellie,
If the book states 15/50w, THEN USE IT. As Aprilia designates this grade to be used. If you start fooling about with different viscousity levels, the clutch and gear box probably wont work properly, and the topend won't get enough oil to lubricate all the moving parts. Only change the thickness of oils in extreme (weather) temperatures. eg.starting in subzero temps (Ant)Artic regions or in deserts. Personally I want my bike to operate and last, so I use what the manufacturer specifies.

Sorry to jump in but i have my 2007 Tuono R in the garage and they have been advised by Silkolene to use pro4plus 5w40.

Any advice.

I just use what the manufacturer recommends. You really can't go wrong that way, either from an operational standpoint or from a warranty standpoint. 15w-50 is pretty much readily available, so I'd use what they recommend.

i stupidly topped mine up with 10/40 before i checked what it was supposed to be. it could be coincidence but the oil pressure switch failed the same week and left the right hand side of the bike covered in oil.

thanks for that lads , but i,ll think 15 /50 will go in to be on the safe side

Whichever one you use make sure its semi-synthetic, not fully synthetic other wise you'll snooker the clutch. Putoline do good bike oils etc and ONLY for bikes.

Sorry, but that's not really true anymore. I've run fully synthetic motorcycle oil in several bikes with over 100,000 total miles accumulated with no clutch problems whatsoever. In addition, Aprilla and Rotax recommend fully synthetic oils for the motors in our Tuono. What you can't run is fully synthetic AUTOMOBILE oil with the energy saving label. These have friction modifiers that will mess with your clutch. Most, if not all, synthetic motorcycle oils in the correct weight range will work fine.

Dead Right.
Its got to be motorcycle oil its got antifoaming agents in it. Re the clutch and gearbox.
Cheers.
Aldo 08,

ive come across a few bikes that synthetic oil has messed the clutch up in including the ktm duke 2 i had and my girlfriends dads tl1000s. but i hab an old oil boiler gsxr1100 that was fine and a mate got me to do an oil and filter change on his 600 bandit using fully synthetic and thats fine to so who knows? luck of the draw i think.

Aprilia recommend Agip 15/50 and semi not full. Page 109 in your manual and RSVR.net will probably also confirm. In UK we have experienced several fully synthetic related problems. It's your risk and your wallet.

Actually I checked page 109 in my 2007 manual. That page discusses front brake lever adjustment. While they do recommend AGIP Racing 4T 15W-50 (A Semi-synthetic), in the specifications on page 234 of the 2007 manual they state "Use brand name oil with performance characteristics at or above the level CCMC G-4 A.P.I. SG SAE 15W-50". Again, I will personally keep to my posts on the advantage of using full synthetic oil and use that in my Tuono as I do in all my bikes. Hard to argue with 7 different bikes over the last 14 years and not one clutch problem in well over 100,000 miles. Maybe I'm just lucky.

You've not necessarilly been lucky, but, with respect many different vehicles can and do use Fully-synthetic oils satisfactorally. Nevertheless this is "Tuonozone" and as such we are concerned with Tuono's for which, as you say the recommended oil is 15/50 semi-synthetic. It is therefore ill advised to vary from the manufacturers recommendation.

Vary from manufacturers recommendation? What part of "Use brand name oil with performance characteristics at or above the level CCMC G-4 A.P.I. SG SAE 15W-50" do you not understand? Sorry but I stand by the fully synthetic oil. Especially for such a high performance engine as what comes in our Tuono. This is not varying from the manufacturers recommendation, but exceeding their recommended minimum.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. Oil threads tend to get way too opinionated anyway. I can only speak for myself and my experiences and you can only speak from yours. :thumbup

I just bought some respol 4t motorcycle racing oil fully syn, 15w50

I would have bought a blend, but they didn't have it. This is made for motorcycles, says on the bottle back it is made to perform with wet clutches.

I like the advantage of using syn, and you never know how much synthetic is actually in the blend now, do you (unless it says so, of course...)
