It's a one way freewheel/clutch that sits in the drive train between the starter motor and engine. It engages when the starter motor is driving the engine but freewheels once the engine starts.
So, yes one bit of it is constantly spinning with the engine but the other bit isn't

...costs a fortune when it fails lol, tho not that funny really.
Never use throttle when starting, mines lasted 63k, tho now I have said this... it will prolly fail tmrw...

As above - but don't let certain people scare you:devious it's not that bad a job and there are cheaper solutions than paying full price for Aprilia parts.

Haveing replaced mine 3 times beleave me it really isn't that bad it doesn't cost a fortune its more of an inconvenience than a real problem.

A seriouse case of bad luck i'd only had the bike a couple of weeks when it went the first time at that point I new nothing about rsv's and got very scared by how much the parts were going to cost and then a mate of mine offered me a new engine for less than the cost of parts about a month after the new engine went in that sprag went but with some help from kiwi we managed to tempery repair which lasted just over a week by this time I new a bit more about these things so then I replaced it with the bmw part and 3 months on its all good part of the problem was not being able to keep the bike on charge but with the uprated battery things have inproved a bit.

how did you temporary repair it? it's good to know in case you're on a trip and want to get home. every village has an auto shop so repairing would be ok.

Normally the first stage of a sprag going is that the spring strechs if you catch it early you can shorten the spring which should get you home when I did mine it a lasted about 10 days in which time I covered about 500 miles its not ideal but it should get you out of trouble.
