Copied this from from another aprilia forum. Its was from a guide to owning the RSV`s

"3.If you try and start the bike and it fails to start the first time, with the cold idle open all the way, then these bikes have a tendency to flood out. At this point, it's best to hold the throttle wide open and try to start it again. If she starts, let go of the throttle right away so it drops down to the fast idle. This will clear out the extra gas in the cylinders. If this doesn't work, leave the fast idle open and let the bike be for awhile. You are hoping the gas that is on the plugs now will evaporate. If it doesn't, then its new plug time."

Now is that suggesting that if your bike fails to start first time you can shag the plugs!?
What madness is this?

think he just means that the plugs will need dried, cos they will be soaking with fuel...

But surely once its running then alls good? I mean combustion in the cylinder would clear any residue no? Esply as these have 2 per cylinder to help each other out.

Just struck me as abit drastic. Wondered if anyone had heard that before..

hmm that whole thing sounds fishy to me.. i dont have a great understanding of "flooding" but i guess its possible the reason a flooded engine makes the plugs too wet to spark, seems a bit farfetched to me but hey.. wierder things happen

anyway the leaving it alone for a while hoping the fuel evaporates sorta makes sense (although evaporating stuff usually goes up.. where the plugs are..) so they are not soaked when you come back 10 minutes later and can produce a spark

never ever had a flooding problem on my 05 model though, perks of having electronic fuel injection & choke etc i guess

I have experience of flooding. But usuallu if the plug was too wet to fire that would just mean whipping it out and cleaning it, if leaving it for awhile didnt work.
But if it fired up job done....

The only flooding i had was when the wife left the bath running dozy mare.......

x2 ive done this myself after 30 mins of farting about and getting nowhere I tried the WOT method and fired on the first pip.

Well i never!!! Had leave home yesterday at 630 for my 120m ride to work, if i take the bike due to a proposed late finish i normally get kitted up sit on the bike, full choke, start, gear, away otherwise the whole village will get a rendition of the Vtwin. Forgot choke, pressed button, started cut out straight away as you would expect. opened choked, pressed button nothing, switched off, on tried again nothing, threw keys as to late to go in car now as would be proper late, nearly kicked it over and sent it for spares and repairs. Helmet golves off, Remembered SteveR's link (this one) switched on, opened choke, full throttle, pressed button 3 seconds later, the village are awake to the sound of a sonic boom and she's alive!!!!! take time putting hat and gloves on, fuXX the neighbours live the dream. 20m down the road it pished down all the way to work. had my course and at 1515 it started raining and rained for nearly 80m home and went 20m to M42 from work to find out it was shut for an incident so had to go 15m back way came to go a38 derby to nottingham instead. Great day had by all.
ps i put a YTX14 battery on is it worth putting a 100 or 150 amp solenoid on do you reckon? and my charging voltage on display is 12.8 is this ok its an 02 mille??

Cheers all Jonny rotten and his wheels of brembo

Bigger relay, 100 or 150 amp is a good mod, and relatively cheap. My original one was acting up and it nearly costed ne the sprag clutch, was in time replacing battery and relay so a reasonably simple repair of the sprag worked.
Regardingnyournvoltage on the dsiplay, this is not accurate, if you want to be sure what the voltage is use a multimeter.
Have seen up to 25% difference in dash voltage and good multimeter measurement. I use it only for an indication, more like do i have voltage ;-)

For a flooded engine one could also take of the heads and use the wife's hairdryer......if thats too much work go for the full throttle method. Over here in the netherlands we also use that method (and smoke cannabis etc)

Ciao,
Frans

Its an old trick, works with cars as well, wide open throttle allows more air in, just dont pump the throttle or you will flood it even more.

You dont want to be making a habit of this or you will cause damage, as soon as it fires knock it back immediately, remember the engine is cold and the oil has not got circulated.

There is no choke on these bikes it is a fast idle, the late 2003 model does not have any fast idle lever

Oh, and yes as fran said use a good voltmeter for an accurate reading, close to 14 volts at 4000rpm is what you want.

I just put a new battery in my 2000 Mille R, and was thinking on doing this mod, because I never saw over about 13.3 volts by using the readout on the dash.
So after I replace the battery, I get the ole meter out and put it across the battery terms @ about 2500 ~3000 rpm and get 14.3 !
So I'm like whadafuk?
switch the dash to volts and with the bike on high idle, the dash is happily glowing at 13.2, and the meter across the battery is saying about 14.2 14.3...

I have just found a new 150amp solenoid for £30 so will get and fit. i will check the battery voltage before i look into rectifier but i reckon it will be ok. :)

Cheers guys

Its common knowledge that on all bikes you use nil choke or quarter to start a bike from cold { This blows or burns the fuel residue through }.initially.
Very rare you need full choke.
40 years of riding bikes of all types learns u this.

that maybe, however every bike i have owned has always needed the choke or cold start or fast idle pulled on when cold. the millie didnt have any on and i pushed the button then it wouldnt start which led to the issue so i shall disagree with the comment by virtue of being tried and tested on my own machine/machines and only a short 19 years of owning bikes.

Badger, my bad mate, its fast idle LOL

Surely the different reading here would be due to the amount of drain the loom has on the voltage before it reaches the dash? Surely the dash and loom could drain a volt?

RSVStupid - Glad my thread helped you out ;)

We all know what the Italians are like with electronics but wouldnt they have been able to take this into account and callibrate the dashboard readout to compensate for this?

Nah man, siesta time innit!

But once you take it into account the gauge is usable :)
