What are the best mods to improve the 2003 Tuono.

Hi,

I have just collected my unmolested 2003 Tuono last Friday. It is completely standard!! I've not got a massive budget, so I'm looking for some tips on what are better mods to do to simply improve handling and engine performance. It does have braided brake lines already but that's it.

Also, what are the best tyres for the occasional track-day, commuting and Sunday blasts, so a general all-rounder.

Any tips and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

cheers Oliver

Best mods to ANY Tuono is a track day or two to sharpen the rider. I am currently saving $3K by NOT buying carbon wheels for my baby, Andiamo. Instead, I am in the process of losing 4-5 stone so that the bike handles better and the rider isn't a wheezing mess after one go round at the track...

That being said, go back and troll thru the previous threads. There are some magnificent Tuoldos out there and some very rightfully proud owners.

Have fun!

C'mon, Keith...

"New Gen I owner looking for like minded individuals. I like Italian twins, riding like a **** occasionally, and enjoy witty banter on Interweb bike forums".

I read that in the paragraph, didn't you?

Spend a bit of time on it first, you might like it as it is. Might even have a few mods done at that vintage, be surprised if it hadn't.

Musta missed that bit mate.:yes

Hi,

Seriously dude..... Ok I will humour you what type of introduction would you like?.. my name is Oliver, I am 8 years old and still believe in father Christmas.

Oliver

1. Make sure the engine is derestricted. (details HERE) Details are for a Falco, but it's the same.

2. Ditch the dustbin sized silencer and get a loud pipe.

3. Get the suspension set up for you - the rear shock isn't fantastic on the Tuoldo, but it can be sorted .

4. If you like a sharper steering bike, drop the yokes down the forks.

5. Bleed the rear brake.

6. Swap the front 17T sprocket for a 16T. If you haven't got one on it already. TIP almost every Gen 2 owner has a 16T sprocket on a shelf at home, just ask, someone will send you one for the cost of posting it.

7. If you want a bit more fun, stick a 44 tooth rear sprocket on it or go down to a 15 tooth at the front.

Dont worry about gearing or the speedo, it reads the rear brake rotor bolts and is very accurate if you have a 180/55 tyre fitted. Even on 16/44 or 15/42 gearing top gear will redline at over 160mph - you wont get that fast.

8. Fit a better screen - I know it's a naked, but the wind blast on a Tuoldo is evil. Most efficient screen is the MRA touring, bit of a fugly fecker though, the MRA spoiler screen is better looking and pretty good.

9. Bleed the rear brake again.

10. Fill your credit card buying Ohlins, Akra's, Carbon Fibre, Oz wheels, ASV levers etc.

11. Fit mirrors from a shiver/Dorso - see past your elbows and they look nicer.

12. Replace all the bolts with purple ones.

13. Peel the grey or gold decal off the tail unit.

14. Ignore the stupid responses in this post. :thumbup

Some of the boys get pissed off when folks just come on here for info, then **** off without bye or leave.

...or forget awe that an buy a Gen 2!

.....ye will never need to molest it ever....

.....NOT!

Did I mention that Batfastard is our resident guru of all things pre '96?? Thanks BF. I know that you must have a sticky of that by now... but it sure as **** helps the newbs to get sorted quickly.

People like BF is why I heart my Zone membership...

And nob, you little fanny... Yes, it's optimisitic, but I'll be fully ****** if I'm going to be fat and fifty. A svelte 225lbs, + - will suit me to a T...

(get it?? *giggle* *snort*)

excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge but just read the derestricting thingy and i have an aprilia evo race pipe coming this week for my tuoldo, if it hasn't already been done I cut the wire, remove the bung fit the can and thats it?

no re-mapping needed?
no adverse affects on engine?

sorry if all this has been asked before but ive searched this forum and many others and am still not 100% sure

please help batfastard, you appear to know what your on about.

although I think it must have been done cause my arse dyno thinks it feels more than 100hp

cheers nob

will give it a go when the pipe arrives, chips seem cheap enough
will try it without first (im skint, wedding next month) then see how it goes.
got the can off ebay £45 with few scratches and scuffs, but not bothered about looks.

Should be fine, cutting the wire activates Map 2 on the Tuoldo chip. I would be VERY surprised if it wasn't already done.
I ran my Tuoldo on an Akra slip on for it's first year without a replacement chip, PCIII or similar.

Pop the seat off and have a look - I bet the wire is cut already, also lift the tank at the front - there is a prop under the rear seat acts like a bonnet stay. Look under the air filter - if it has a plastic funnel/snorkel thing there then it hasn't been derestricted.

In the strictest terms it will be a bit lean at low revs and low throttle - this is how Aprilia got the engine through EU emission regs, which makes it snatchy at car park speeds. Drop the gearing as noted elsewhere or just ride the clutch a little, it will not harm the engine.

Oh - the genuine "Aprilia" race pipe is ferkin LOUD, have fun. :)

Every time I read threads like this I wanna find a totally unfettled T and sort it in me lab. Gets me juices flowing.

just fitted the can and f**k me its loud, but a nice loud so im keeping it.
runs really sweet, better than the standard pipe. really notice a step in the midrange.

not had chance to have a look at wires, airboxes and chips yet but to be honest i think they've been done.
cheers again for advice lads.
