What am I doing wrong as regards connecting the pc3 usb

On a 00' Mille.....tonight I went out with the laptop and the cable, now according to what I've on their site, as soon as it's connected (engine off) it's supposed to recognise the pc3 and what map's on it....I got nothing

I then turned the bike on.....still nothing, I'm probably something stupid so will someone tell me what it is...:confused

Thought I should say, I havent got a cd but didnt think I need one, or maybe I do for intitial set up

Yes I've got the software installed and the plug was fully "in" both on the pc3 and the laptop, when I first connected it I got the "new usb (something or other) being installed".....and that was it, nothing else to be seen. I thought maybe there was (for some reason) a duff usb port on the laptop so switched sides but was still the same....dont know what's wrong or what I'm doing wrong

Sounds like the laptop has recognised the new usb device. That's good. Indicates a level of success even though not complete success.

It's been a while since I did mine but I don't remember any problems other than the ones I've already mentioned. It's a bit late to try mine tonight. I will try and check tomorrow but might not be until the evening.

What does the pc3 software say? Any error message? or anything at all?

You have to have the 9v battery & connector pluged into the PCIII unit to activate it so the Maps can be loaded !

I thought you just connected it to a laptop.....so the pc3 has to be powered up too with that connector before it'll work

I do not have the 9V connector and have had no trouble using my pc3 usb with a laptop. 9V connector is if you want to do stuff to the pc3 away from the bike. it is just an alternative power supply. If pc3 has 12V bike power it is all it needs.

I thought that to apostrophe, just forgot to say....so I was right in something :biggrin

I'll try it again just shortly....but

I might take off and see what it's like standard

Yes, that's why the 9V connector is an optional item and not included with the standard pc3 usb, most people are happy to program it on the bike.

Should be pretty easy to take off. You can leave it physically where it is but just disconnect it's electrics and reconnect the originals while you try it out. Do you have the install instructions?

I connected it again but all I get is "usb interface connected" and a twirling circle next to the cursor arrow, then it's gone ad nothing else come up

This might sound daft but i'm begining to wonder if the pc3's connected to the bike hence no readings

Have a read through that install guide and it should be easy to see if it's connected. One lead from the pc3 goes to the battery earth, 5 leads are bundled together and go to the engine bay (1 to each throttle body, 1 to each of the original throttle body connectors (like in Fig A & B in that link) and finally 1 to the throttle position sensor lead (that one is probably one of those wire-tap connectors like in Fig C )).

If it's all connected then I'm pretty sure pc3 must be working internally but why won't it talk to your computer properly? Not sure. Could be a problem at either pc3 or laptop end. Do other usb devices work with the computer via usb port. e.g. your phone? I'm busy for a while now but will have a look at mine later and see if I can work out what to do next.

You got another computer you could try?

Did you buy the proper connector or can you fudge it somehow?

I tried her laptop and it nearly worked but not....

She's got Vista I've got 7 pro.....when I plugged it into hers, I got a window saying PC3 recognised and installing ect ect, then it stopped and again, nothing!. I checked to see if was in the "recently installed items", nope!, couldnt find it anywhere.

On mine, I think it's because it's not compatable with 7 Pro despite someone else saying it was fine on theirs, on wont work on mine, dont know why but it wont. I was going to take it off just to try it standard but the wire that connects to the t/b, I didnt know to open it (blue plastic case) incase I broke it, so plugged the 2 others up again.

As T Davidsso said....I'll get that 9v connector unless I can bodge something up and try it with that....what a bloody carry on :roll

It was me that said it works with windows 7. Just tried it with Win 7 Pro and it's fine.

These guys had no problem too http://www.hayabusa.org/forum/busa-mods/144872-power-commander-iii-usb-windows-7-a.html

Note the guy who says you've got to give it a good push....

Yes you do. The lead on mine seems to be fully in the pc3 but does not register on the laptop. You have to push it really firmly in. It kind of clicks and goes in about 0.5mm more and Bob's you chuffing uncle.

I can't remember but I might have set the software to run in XP compatibility mode. I can't remember how to check if I did.

Let me know if you get there or not.

...and removing the lead also requires serious force (just done it, it needs two hands). I'm sure I must have plugged and unplugged 000's of usbs over the years. This is the only one that is anything like this.
