Water temperature hotter since fitting radiator guard.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem where the water temp runs hotter after fitting a rad guard? I have a new Factory 1100 Tuono which has an Evotech rad guard fitted. Prior to fitting the guard it was rare to see the water temperature up to 100C whilst actually moving it does get to about 105C in traffic at lights etc. The bike runs quite cool at speed but heats up very quickly once I slow down to around 30mpg. There must be enough holes in the guard when getting a move on but I think it's restricting the air to the radiator at lower speeds.

Any thoughts?? - Steve
 
thought the same so whilst out for a blast the ones i have, oil and rad just push in.so removed them..didn,t make much difference..i think if the air temp is warm temp stays up i,e, going over brecon beacons today rarely went above 80 degrees but soon as dropped down in to the rural areas temp started climbing even at high speeds

compact race spec engine, small radiator and the exhaust quite close...all those don't help.
Yes adding the guard will hurt cooling at all speeds but most at low speed....personally i wouldn't worry as long as the fan keeps doing its job and you get moving within 20-30 minutes....after that the battery will start suffering all the fan work.
 
Thanks for the info both. Strange thing on my Fireblade the rad guard made no difference ran as cool as ever. I noticed a big difference today with the Tuono I've never had the temp go to 100 while still moving and 106 standing still for a couple of minutes. The rad guard on the Fireblade is an R&G mostly mesh the Evotech rad guard has hexagonal holes punched out of aluminium sheet about 3mm thick it's bomb proof very sturdy. Do you think the type of construction would make much difference?
 
Thanks for that I think that nano stuff is the same as Evans - that doesn't boil to about 180c but apparently your engine does run slightly hotter than water and anti freeze. Water is a better conductor to remove the heat that said Evans has a lot more going for it - zero corrosion no pressure to blow pipes etc.
My issue is do I put up with higher water temperatures or do I take off the rad guard. The design of the guard can only let 64% of the available air flow to pass through onto the radiator. This seems fine at speed because of the ram air effect but obviously it blocks a fair percentage of the air flow at low speed.
 
Get some wire mesh off eBay like the boy racers use to cover the inter coolers ect cut it to shape use thin cable ties and rubber washers to secure it and sell your air deflector :thumbup
 
I used evotech (I think it was) guards on my 1050 Speed triple and those made it run a lot hottor. The one on my T are fine whilst moving but hit a town and the temp rises pretty quickly but the fans work well
 
These bikes do run hot, idling when hot sometimes 103 degrees. Rad guards shout not make that much difference.
 
I would have thought it obvious, if you restrict the amount of air to the radiator, then you are restricting the cooling of the water inside it. Seems common sense to me, unless I am thick. :lol
 
Same fir me when a fitted rad guards tae ma gen 2,,,,,,,,,,,,nae probs when yer oot On IT but a different story when yer sittin in taffic.

Fir the gen2 boys,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mind not to kill the engine until the fans stop. A think they turn off at 93 or 94.

All perforated plate comes with a percentage of air flow attached to it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,jist depends on whit % yers are.
 
My 14 plate had radiator guards fitted, i removed them because i thought there could be a problem with heat, the amount of small stones/grit that fell out from behind them may have caused a heat issue at some point if it was left to build up over time.
 
Occasional cleaning sounds sensible. But having no guards will result in radiator damage. And a stone punctured radiator is the fastest way to get a 'big' heat problem! ;)
 
I've been riding for 35 years and never had a puctured radiator, yes radiators sustain damage but rarely puncture.
