this is not my opinion but going to ask you lot your's
been talking to a few folk now and asked them about checking valve clearence at the correct mile's.
a couple have said why bother! do it when you here something .
lets just say one of these was a bloke who was supposed to sevice bike's for a living he said can you trust it's been done without doing it your self.
so whats your thought's

go back and ask your man there how you can tell if the valve clearences are tight..............then watch the fool squirm!

they put valve clearence checks into the service schedules fore a reason mate, check your handbook , also the times or milages are shorter if you race your bike!! (track days but the translation never works !)
makes sense when you think about it dont it!
i check mine once a year mate, yep ive never had to change mine but i know mine are right!!

take care!
Griff

get it done and ask for the figures

you can't hear a tight valve

get it done! better to be safe than sorry. Going to check mine as soon as the weather picks up, personally it will make me feel more comfortable for the summer knowing everything is in spec.

As as we all know rsv valves tighten probably more often than widen and that is often the case with bucket and shim valves. So when you hear a noise it's probably already fecked

Ps don't let that person dishing the advice service your bike

don't worry as i said not my opinion and i always stick with what the bloke's who design these machine's say i have a bloke i can trust to do the job.
but when you get talking to some folk it just make's you wonder what **** some poor suckers have to deal with

A vital part of my bikes service.
The cam & valve stems are obviously hard. A shim is fitted between them, this is soft. It is designed to be sacraficial & therfore wears! Shims are available in different thicknesses & the acceptable tollerances are in the manual. I would say on average that half of mine are changed every 7k.

OTOH - When I took mine in to Southern Cross for a 16k major valve and shims check, Don said that in all his time checking valves and shims on the RSV engine, he had only ever seen one which needed adjusting (at that service), and in his experience this was down to poor maintenance (low oil)/thrashing from cold. :dunno

Other posters are right though, because of the bucket and shim valves they actually get quieter as they wear more, so no noise is not necessarily a good thing.

:confused They say in the haynes manual check every 9000 miles or 24 months,i brought my bike in nov 08.The bloke i brought it from was sound and had the bike 3 years and they were done before he brought the bike.
In that 3 years he only did 1200 miles on it,so should i check mine. Its done nothing near the 9000 miles but year over the 24 months time scale.
When the weather warms up i am going to have a go and check them for peace of mind.:biggrin.Hope its a easy job.

my fully serviced RSV has doen 56.6k miles with no valve adjustment required!!!!!

needed adjusting at first service

Therein lies the dilemma - some do, some don't but you never know till you check.

38,000 going strong last checked at 16,000 am going to do them soon but have to say never known anybody to have to adjust their clearances:dunno
not a massive problem as thought i think but that said it is always worth a check:biggrin

Bought my bike when She had 10k. Take it to Southerncross for every service (last one 19k) and they said it was not necessary to check the valves. I did check with Andy because He is the only one I trust there, aside of the owner, and He told me He checked the compression in the cylinders and they were fine= valves are fine. :dunno

thing is guys its not hard to check em it just gets a little complicated when you have to adjust em!

dont risk it check em!

like i said i do it once a year on my bikes milage or not!

Couldn't agree more Griff...inspection/prevention in this case is definately better than the possible outcome. :thumbup
Respects ol mate

how doe's the valve clearence go tight:dunno understand it going loose and noisey but is that old stile

valves go tight when the valve seat wears or erodes especially if the mixture is a bit lean, although the rsv engine is known to be tough

A couple on my front cylinder have gone tight. Just about to adjust them now. Probably going to get told off by Griff here, but I will adjust them using an oil stone, calculator and some calipers.

Do you reckon a feckwit mechanic like me can check them on my bike .....or should I go and check them on someone elses first lol
