Hi Guys ,
How do I check the valve timing on my 04 tuono rsv r , as it is not starting , back firing & making a crunching sound when turning over ,,:confused

crunching sound? when you hit the starter?

sounds like your sprag may have lunched it - DO NOT keep hitting the starter, take off your clutch cover and have a look inside - my gues sis bits of metal from the sprag. You'll need to pull the cam covers to check the valve timing - if you're comfortable using spanners then its a fairly eay job just fiddly.

Deacs :thumbup

As deacs says, but regarding valve timing, if your worried something has gone wrong in the heads [ doubtfull] best check if there is compression, take1 spark plug out of each cylinder , put bike in gear with ignition off , turn back wheel with your thumb over plug hole and then if there is pressure then your timing may be ok,hope this helps.

Hi Guyz thanks very much 4 da help , on takin the generator cover off, I found no damage to any teeth on cogs , but the large cog behind the generator flywheel is loose , duz anyone kno if the 14mm alan stud ( retaining bolt ) on the generator flywheel is l/hand thread , or R/h thread,,as i need to remove this to investigate this further what is meant by the sprag !!?

the large gear behind the flywheel should only turn in one direction, if it goes in both that indicates that the sprag is shot. The sprag is a bearing that stops the engine kicking back on the starter moror, basically to stop any damage when starting.

From memory its a standard thread but you need to lock the crankshaft by removing a bolt on the other side, I used a long allen key. BUt what I would say I would say is that you neednt loosen that bolt until you are ready to change it because you also need a puller to remove the flywheel.

PM Tash (Mark) and he can give you the costs of a sprag because you have two options, 1- Aprilia or 2- BMW (cheaper option) the only difference is that the BMW one fits in reverse. Ive got this one in mine and its no problem. The whole change job when doing it for the first time whill only take a steady 2 hours.

Hit the search button on sprag as theres a link to a walk through guide. I wish I had done one on here while mine was in bits.

EDIT heres the link http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155882

I didnt use a caliper to measure the gear as the guy does in the link, you can tell if anything has excesive wear or is badly scored.

As long as you havnt been churning the engine over loads everything should be fine and only a sprag and gasket needed.

Its also a good chance to change the oil & filter while your on ;)
