Valve Clearance Service

Just been quoted £660 for 10K miles service to include valve clearance check.

Now that is £500 extra I could be spending on new kit, a week away or even a deposit for new bike.

Any thoughts on the pros and cons of not having this checked. Would it affect resale value, would you buy a used bike knowing it hadn't been done.

Anyone had it done on the capo, and has needed adjustment, or has anyone had it done for a lower price?

In my experience more often than not the check proves no adjustment is required, would you wait until higher mileage, the manual recommends check at 20K KM?

G'day Darren.......the very first valve check is scheduled for 20,000kms/12,000miles. I paid Aus $1k for mine (it takes approx 8 hrs to remove all the body work and radiator to gain access to the donk).

My mechanic said once they got to the motor it was easy peasy to do the work, but then it was another time consuming re-build to put it back together.

I'd say that the 12,000mile service is a must do.....then you could do the oil changes in between (eg I was changing my M5100 10w50 every 5,000kms=3,000miles) and you could feel safer not doing the next major valve check until much later (since it requires new coolant every time to do valves and plugs). Plugs.....some members changed to Iridium so they could go 40k+kms instead of the standard plugs 20k kms(12k miles) life. So the valves could fit in with a plug change (iridium) in future......

It's your call.....but this is it's first valve check ever and you can't know if it's all ok unless they are checked.

Cheers and good riding from Aus;)

Cheers mate,

Really good advice, gives me a bit more of an idea what I'm paying for!

I'm just watching the Superbikes from Phillip Island at the moment, it looks lovely.

We are just coming out of the gloomy UK winter, my bike hasn't been out for the last 4 months, so really looking forward to getting back out on it next week.
