i bought a lightly wrecked 2002 rsv and i think its valves need adjusting,is this something a mecanicly inclined guy can do or is it better left to a shop?tia:dunno

Unless you are a vehicle technician I wouldn't advise you to have a go.

It's a V twin with quad cams and shim adjusted valve clearances.

My advise, give it to someone who knows exactly what they are doing.

PS. What makes you think the valve clearances are incorrect?

With shimmed valve clearances they tend to lose clearance and if not tended to they keep the valve open slightly hence you won't hear a tappety rattle but will hear popping in the exhaust system and experience a lack of power.

If you don't know when they were last checked it's time to check.

i think they need adj.because the guy i bought it from said he never did it and it has 15k on it,it ticks alot as if they are on the loose side.i was just wondering if it was something i could do or not.oh well i'll make an appointment :pirate

There is no reason why you cannot check the clearances yourself if you are resonably handy as this just needs the valve covers to be removed.

The hard bit is if the shims need changing as this will mean pulling the cams

Wondered the same thing. Did the checking and adjustin my self for Suzie SV.

Mine is 2002.
- you need to remove the tank and the aircox to get access to valve covers?
Anything else?
On Suzie you needed to get rid of the radiator as well to get access.
Any hints on checking the valves?
Mine is -02 and has done 12000km I did get a service booklet with 7500km service done, but im not confident with it.

Cheers

Hi Jussi

I haven't actually done it but intend to
According to Haynes you also have to remove the throttle bodies.
I assume to access some of the cover bolts.

Whether these need to be fully removed or they can just be shifted to one side I won't know until I try but someone on here will probably know

Relatively straighforward job.

Tank off
Airbox off
Loosen TBs
Clean the crap off the valve covers
Valve covers off - front pot valve cover bolt is a swine but patience.
Plugs out
You can use the locking tool they talk about in the mauals but I ve never done so - just dont turn the engine when you dont need to.
Allen key inthe end of the crank to measure TDC
Check clearances
If any are out then you need to remove the cams to get to the shims( under buckets)
Do one pot at a time.
When putting all back togather use grease to hold the cover gasket in place when you replace the cover - saves a lot of swearing.

There is an excellent post on the AF1 site. Ill try and find it.

This was a good one - a little like in Suzie and in Suzie you also need to remove the cams in case of need of an adjustment

Gathered the info and made an pdf file of it.
Anyone keen of getting it via e-mail ct. me.

Hopefully we are violating any rights ??
