Tuono engine start problem

Hey guys,

Got my first T 06 a month ago, before buying she started with no problems (she was well look after). Previous owner put the new battery, but could't charge it properly (he put the battery same day I bought her). When due to circumstances had to leave her in the cold for a month without starting. And guess what she won't start any more. Was hoping that the battery can still crank (came from inline four, didn't know about this problem). Had very slow first crank and when clicking noise, clock reset etc. (obvious signs for dead battery). Decided to charge it properly on optimiser to get good crank. Now it looks like it cranks well (better than for the first time) but not starting. She fired for couple of seconds and then died. Can hear pump fuel working also smell of petrol. As I understood correctly from many posts that with bad starter relay she wont crank at all??? Will you still advice to change relay and check plug wires, spark plugs like with Nick's case? I don't think plugs will come out due transportation, because I wasn't riding her after buying. I will be really happy with any advice as I'm lost a bit now.
 
You`ve probably flooded it. Try again about midday.

Key in, turn on, let pump whirrrrr etc and press starter button only................ should go .

Have you an alarm on it ???? .........................drains battery over time.
 
To back up what Hector says, both our Tuono's sit unused through winter. When I dig them out in spring to start them, Liz's will sometimes flatten the battery before it fires back up. Once it does it stumbles and misfires for a minute or two until everything settles down. As Hector says - just press the starter button, DONT twist the throttle. Liz always twists the throttle when she starts hers, causes more hassle than help. (To be fair it does sometimes simply start up when you press the starter even after 3 months)

As we have said a thousand times on this forum, keep it on an optimate whenever it's in the garage.
 
no alarm or any other power draining items )) straight away a question about starter button - how long you need to hold it, where is that safety area? (obviously you know about sprag clutch stories). Manual says 15 seconds when wait 10 sec and try again, people on forums says 2 sec. Also it looks like the battery drains quite quickly after couple of attempts to crank the engine. Does it mean the battery is rubbish and I better try another one or jump start it?
 
If the battery is up to it ( some on here have a 14 volt battery) It should start more or less right away.................1 _ 2 sec.s.

Seeing as he put the battery on, on the same day may sugest it is naff . Battery life is around 2-3 years anyway........buy a new one . Some one will advise the best on.

The battery on mine is the original one and still going strong..........touch wood
 
the batter looks as it new but strange brand for me (Rob Hunter YTX12-BS 12V 10Ah) I don't know how reliable this battery is.
 
No idea who "Rob Hunter" is but the Yuasa YTX12-BS is the standard battery on a Tuono. As Hector mentions you can fit the YTX14-BS which is 12Ah so it has a bit more oomph to start the bike cold, it's std fitment on the Capo.

FWIW the dash uses power 24/7 so keep it on a battery tender.
 
Mines on the optimate most of the winter to keep the battery charged.
Come spring and starting, it farts, coughs and splutters the first time, but after that its fine. Hope I haven't jinxed it for this spring.:thumbup
 
I will leave my battery on the optimate until weekend and have a try, cross fingers she will fire. I will also take voltmeter readings and check relay, ground and brown connectors just in case )))
 
just a word about batterys
we wont fit anything other than yuasa in the workshop as the cheaper ones are just hastle
these babys need all the battery umph ! they can get and none supply it better than yuasa
and there is a lot of talk about fitting the yamaha starter relay because it is a 100 amp relay as opposed to the std 50 amp
the relay doesnt control the ammount of flow to the starter,so an rsv or tuono only takes approx 20 amps from the battery on start up max so the std unit is workin well within its capabilitys.

so just buy a decent battery and keep it on an optimate whilst not in use
tis what i do on mine and i have no problems
 
And I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) models from 2004 comes with 100 amp relay anyway? And I will definitely get rid of 'Rob' )))
 
One more question. Is there any modifications need to be done to fit YTX14-BS?
 
just checked the parts list and now they are all rated at 150 amps
the battery will fit straight in but you wont be able to use the fitting bracket that holds it down (but the seat will do that for you anyway)

and they are a lot cheaper than the yamaha item as well
 
just ordered YTX14-BS Westco Motorcycle Battery 12V 12Ah, westco looked better with AGM technology than Yuasa or Varta - more crank )))
 
Quick update on another unfortunate try to start the bike. First of all Westco showed itself from the bad side so far. Straight out of the box, couldn't even turn engine once!! Put back on YTX12-BS (Rob Hunter) battery which I have put on charge last week and had better crank and almost looked like she fired at one point. Westco still struggling!!! So I think after so many tries engine will definitely flood. Decided to wait and put Rob Hunter battery back on charge (it gives better crank). After couple of hours last try before it gets dark with almost fully charged Rob Hunter. Much better crank, but still no fire :( So my question will be: any ideas?? :) What next?? Checked everything: grounds, relays, brown connector, battery connectors, fuses....What I didn't check is spark plugs. I guess all symptoms showing that: not firing, smell of fuel. And it will be my next step to check.
 
try to start with the throttle wide open this sometimes clears the plugs
if not replace or clean the plugs
fresh fuel and a good battery
 
Dude, are you turning the ignition on/off between each failed start? You don't wanna do this as it re-initiates the start-up procedure each time and only leads to more flooding

Mine (Gen2) hates cold starts and often needs a bit of coaxing. I find that as soon as I turn it over it fires a bit and then I have to quickly get it to about 4K revs before it dies, and then hold it there for about 10 seconds (no blipping or whacking the throttle open). Then give it a decent amount of time to warm up and she's a good'un

I think this is what i'm doing, almost every time after failure I switch off the ignition :( and she doesn't fire to the level that I can give her a bit of coaxing, dies very quickly...I will follow your advices and keep trying without switching the ignition off
 
It's a pain cos if you don't catch it after the first go or so, it will flood. In which case you'll have to wait a decent amount of time before you get another chance.

You will get the knack of it though, and it only affects it when the ambient temperature is on the nippy side. The upside is that it'll be so ******* cold you won't wanna ride it anyway
