Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum so thought I'd say hello.

I've just bought an 03 rsv1000 tuono fighter and it's great but doesn't cold start? I'm assuming due to the time of year perhaps I need to upgrade the battery but what is the best battery to go for on this bike? I've ordered an oxford battery maintainer too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's a real pain at the moment getting jump starts!

Thanks for reply mate! I looked at those, is the 12amp one any good? I ride all year round so needs to start in sub zero temps!

nahh go with the 14amp up grade....the time of year shouldnt make any difference on the cold start up......
i push the fast idle lever as far as it will go......dont touch the throttle.....punch the start button as soon as it fires up pull the fast idle back to about one third..let it warm up abit and knock the fast idle off.
dont be tempted to pump the throttle when your cranking it over you will flood it out and there really hard to get going again without takein the plugs out
if its got a shagged battery it will be a bad starter as it needs to spin over fast to start/.. if its down on power it will eventually **** up your sprag clutch and you dont wana go there.

Is the yuasa ytx16-bs ok? Will it fit my bike? Im at work and just tried starting it but drained the battery, so got jump leads on it but wouldn't fire up? Can smell petrol too? Gonna have to call breakdown I reckon :-(

nope the the ytx16 is to tall to fit under the seat......the ytx 14 just fits with a longer bolt through the clamp...the ytx12 is standard but be carefull and check the terminals are on the correct side of the battery
it sounds like its flooded........basicly your ****** my friend :banghead

Ok thanks, AS have come out and said it is flooded! But he's not sure what to do? Any suggestions?

Managed to start her up after disconnecting a cable that runs the fuel pump and trying to start a few times! Rode it home but worried it's going to do the same tomorrow? Thanks for the battery suggestion mate I'll get one tomorrow.

Just an update, I bought a yuasa YTX14-BS battery and an oxford oximiser 900 and for 2 days she started on the button! Went to start her this morning and wouldn't start :-/ had to disconnect the fuel pump lead until petrol smell went, then hooked up to the charger she finally fired up! Not sure what to do now? Help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

is it charging......?????
check the connector isnt melted in ftont of the rectifier......you will need to remove the seat cowl /rear plastics and the regulator is on the right behind the pillion foot peg mounting on the subframe ..unplug the big connector blocks and check the pins are not burnt out...

It seems to be charging fine as I leave it plugged into the oximiser overnight and it's fully charged according to the display on that! I don't drive a car and work in the middle of nowhere so need to fix this or I'm buggered :-(

What Roy meant was,...is tne bike charging system working,...i.e what voltage do you have at the battery when the bike is started?
Dont rely too much on the dash readout,...they often lie.

one of the lads up here had the same problem with his t last week....2 batterys and an 4 overnight charges later...i told him to check the wires under the seat and guess what,,,,,, the plug was melted and the wires and conector pins were burnt to buggery....a pair of wire cutters and a soldering iron cured it ...sorted ....

i dont think the stators are troublesome on the gen 1 t are they keith??????/

No,it was the early Gen2's that had a lot of stator/rotor problems.Gen1 problems seem to always stem from dodgy/corroded connections somewhere.

Thanks for the advice guys! I've checked all the wiring and it looks fine. It's started with no probs again for a couple of days, been a tad warmer so only seems to refuse start up when it's freezing? I've noticed the idle is bang on 1000 but fluctuates up and down and doesn't sound settled? The idle control knob appears seized as there isn't any play in it and wd40 isn't helping :-/

There should be loads of travel in it, and it's an essential part of Tuonos starting so that's probably the reason?

On mine, have to put it on full to start, then straight away knock it down a bit after starting. Off completely when temp reaches 51/52.

When I first had the bike tried to start it cold without using it and then wouldn't start for the best part of a day.

stix man
exactly the same with mine.......its a bit of a knack startin up the t ...so easy to flood out,,and usually happens when you have made arrangement to meet a bunch of fuds 50 mile away

I've had soooo many starting problems in the 6 years I've had my Gen1.
Larger capacity battery helps, keep it topped up (optimiser is a good way to go, mine's connected every night after the daily commute).
Cold weather is definitely a factor - from the end of October through to about April mine's an arse.
I've found that with the choke fully out it's heavier to turn over than with the choke in. I tend to leave the choke off for about one second as I hit the starter, then whack it on full whilst still holding the starter until it fires. It spins quicker then catches, but there's definitely a knack to it. But as Roy says, DON'T FLOOD IT! It'll take several days and more than one flat battery before it goes again. Plugs are a ***** to get out 'cos of the frame, but if you can dry them then you get another shot without the wait.
If it doesn't fire, don't keep it turning over for too long. The coils will burn out. And as Roy also says, a flat/low battery will **** the sprag clutch on the starter. Done that too. It makes a bloody awful noise, followed by a big dent in your wallet!

When you get it running, check the volt meter (r/h button on the clocks) - I often find mine running lower than 12v, so basically it's a "total loss" system. There's a lot of talk about the "infamous brown connector" up by the regulator on the rhs under the rear fairing. Check that to see if it's showing signs of melting. Mine looks ok, but I'm about to cut it out and hardwire the wires together anyway. People say that this connector creates a lot of resistance and adds to battery problems. Check out anything you can find on this in the forum.

To sum up - welcome to the Tuono family!!! She's like marmite - love it or hate it! Enjoy......

I was referring to the little round dial poking out between the tank and the frame on the right hand side? Apparently that controls idle speed? But I know what you mean about the choke/fast idle on the left handle bar! Love the bike but she's like an annoying high maintenance girlfriend especially compared to my old vfr800 that was as dependable as they come!! Cheers for all the great advice fellas!

Never noticed that dial?

I've had two VFRs. Great bikes I'd have another. Had a 92 750 & a 98 800.
