Tuono (05) starter relay issues

Hi Guys!!! Newbie on the site. Bought a 05 Tuono R a few months back. 3rd owner. I had no issues and then suddenly bike wouldn't start. Not dead battery...My pals came over and we isolated the issues (think) -- starter relay. It had fried the plastic boots to the heads. Took it out and started the bike using charge from car, and the bike started right up. Rode it around, charged up battery.

I took part to Aprilia dealer. They said $100. Sound normal?
Is this a recurring issue with Tuonos? I saw a thread where the man used a relay from a FORD (yes truck) and says way more powerful and great switch. Or go with OEM?

Bike has only 6,000 miles. (I'm in the USA btw)

Thanks so much....

Hi there

I also have a 05 tuono and my starter relay blew on me when I tried to boost start the bike with the charger plugged in. There is a company in england called speedaways and I got a new relay for around £40 all in.
My friend has the 06 millie and his blew a few weeks ago after a short ride to work. When he tried to turn the bike off the starter motor would not stop and made a very bad noise. He had to put the bike into gear and stall it.
In answer to your question I would go for the OEM part and yes I have seen a few of the relays blow.
But welcome to the aprilia family :)
