trouble starting

Hi, I have been having trouble starting my rsv mille. Sometimes it starts up fine but then I try it the next day and the engine turns over but it just doesn't want to start, then the battery starts to go flat. I have the bike on a optimate charger all the time. When im trying to start the bike but when it doesn't start it smells quite a bit of fuel.

Can anyone help me please, Thanks a lot.

How old is the battery?

Could be the Opt is doing it's job, but the battery won't hold it overnight. Extreme cold will have an adverse effect as well.

When the bike is being turned by the starter, is it slower than usual?

The fuel smell may be normal as it is coming out the exhaust and not being burned in the cylinders. The battery is turning the bike, labouring but not starting?

I had a problem starting after a dormant period, the fuel smell and all. I needed it to turn a little faster to get the raw fuel out of the cylinders and so, hooked up the Jeep's battery to it. (Not running , of course.) The bike started right up. No problems since.

Best advice after this....ride the bike, miles make smiles!

Best of luck ...cheers!

to be honest I think the battery is on the way out, I think I will just get a new battery and hope for the best. I have also been told it might be best to uprate the starter solenoid, do you think that will be necessary?

Hi Jon. Uprated battery and starter solenoid is what you'll find on 99 per cent of Milles on here. Sorry, I don't have the battery number or solenoid part number (Yamaha ones are favourite - they're only about £30 or less) to hand but if you do a search on those terms on here you'll find all you need to know.
If that doesn't cure it then you might want a better ECU chip to match those shotguns (talk to Dr Rossi on here) and get your throttle bodies set up.
Are you using the 'approved' starting proceedure? No throttle at all, cold start lever on full and it should spring into life. If it floods you can try shutting the lever off and giving it full throttle but if this doesn't work after a few seconds don't labour the starter or you risk damaging the sprag starter clutch. Hope this helps.

Hi, i'll have to try uprating the solenoid and get a new batters and hope for the best. Yes, I do start the bike up correctly, when I purchased the bike the bloke showed me how to do it. Sometimes when the bike is trying to start a high pitched knock comes from the engine area, would that be the sprag starter clutch?

It'll be a process of elimination. First change your battery for a either a liquifix gel type YTX14-BS or YTZ14S-BS and replace the starter solenoid for an uprated one. Make sure the battery is fully charged before you put it on the bike though, i.e connect it up to your optimate overnight BEFORE putting it on the bike. This is to make sure the battery is able to accept 100% charge.

Try starting the bike now, it should start instantly the starter is pressed from cold, i.e with full cold start and no throttle. If it doesn't then something else is amiss
