The Best of Times and The Worst of Times

Unfortunately the celebrations may have been a bit premature.

Having started effortlessly on the Fri night, come Saturday morning, nothing....

It flooded first touch (no throttle before you shout) and we eventually got it going by cranking with throttle wide open. This was really unpleasant.

By this time I was cross with it, so I gave it a good thrashing (not Basil Fawlty style). Who knew they would wheelie in 3rd!!

So now its in dock, I've exhausted my technical ability and I aint ashamed to say it. I'm told it sounds like there is a fault on the fueling system. Could be linked to my sticky throttle, like its trying to start on partial throttle opening. When rolling along and you dump throttle closed and dip clutch, it settles down to 2k revs, followed by 1k revs when you blip it.

With 6 weeks until my highland tour, time is on my side. For now....:bawling

Roy, I'm really grateful for the offer. Really decent of you. The bike is already in the workshop of a guy I always turn to when things go bad. I see him quite a lot!

It was booked in to have hot grips fitted and the cheapie alarm removed so he's now got another job on the list. Will pm my mobile over and see if we can't get a lancs ride out in the very near future.

Cheers mate.

top work, Roy.

In prep for Roy - one thing you can do is check all cables aren't furred (up the ones you can get to). Check your earth onto the frame too/engine block. I'd also double check that the air screws are set back to normal (might wait for Royston if he's there he can help as sure he's done it on his). I guess you can always double ckec both throttles are going back tot eh stops when grip is closed.
good luck the pair of yu!

How's it going with the V2 Andy? Any closer to resolving the issue?

Well, the latest update to this sorry tale....

Again thought it was sorted, when throttle cables were found to be incorrectly adjusted at the grip end. Meant that throttle wasn't closing fully (flooding on startup). It was firing up perfectly all day Friday. Tried it quite few times and was starting on the button.

Went to collect it from the workshop on Saturday. No joy at all. So I've had enough of trial and error and it's going off to be hooked up to a diagnostic machine on weds.

On the positive side, new heated grips have been (professionally) fitted and the front wheel has been reinstalled in the correct direction(tyre was on the right way tho!). Brakes have been checked and all good.

Bit of a silly question, but they should start up on the side stand in neutral shouldn't they? Would it still turn over if cut out was activated?

Yes they start in neutral in the side stand. If you're not sure, pull the clutch in. No they won't turn the engine over if the cut out is active

Cheer YJ, I'm looking forward to the diag. results and will post up the findings..!

actually that's not a bad point - I have had clutch switches get gummed up, switchgear get wet. might want to check and dodgy stand connections...

have you got this sorted yet mr andpitts

Well the short answer seems to be yes! I was waiting for the results of full testing to come back, and I can confirm that 4 out of4 cold starts have been successful.

It turned out to be duff wiring combined with water in the fuel. And incorrectly adjusted throttle cables. overfilled oil which had blown into the air box wasn't helping it either.

Previous owner had bodged in a spy ball alarm. I suspected it to be contributing to the poor starting after I had replaced plugs, battery and put in fresh fuel. Bare wires were shorting out in the nose cone and a yellow wire(?)had been snipped. The alarm was carefully ripped out, and all remaining wires repaired, soldered and heat shrunk.

The water in the fuel was a result of corroded and blocked breathers, the water wasn't draining & finding its way into the tank. The other blocked breather wasn't releasing tank pressure, causing a vacuum. Also the fuel pump was full of gunge. Tank was drained (after I'd brimmed it with bp's finest):bawling

It's like riding a new bike, starting is good, Tickover is even and it seems smoother to me.

Many thanks for the offer of help and all of the other suggestions, I found them to be very helpful. Cheers for the support guys :thumbup

Now I've got to find out how to keep the front wheel on the floor and not overtake everything in sight!

If you ever figure this out let me know.

I'm amazed I haven't got a ticket yet - it's only been two months but 180 kmh (115mph) in a 100 (60) zone on the way to work last week won't help.
