What would be the best way to sell a "damaged" RSV

I am talking possible engine damage as yet unidentified

A. Put it on ebay "As Is"
B. Put it on ebay as a breaking for parts
C. Advertise it on the various Aprila forums

What engine damage?

If your engines damaged then I can see one on Ebay for a few quid - Click Me

Make him an offer he can't refuse.

Scott I'm on MSN, let's chat about this before you take drastic action.

I'd sell it as a complete bike to be honest, save you a lot of time and hassle of breaking it and then having to get rid of the parts no one wants!
Thats just my opinion but at the end of the day it's up to you and how much more wasted time you want to spend on it!
Either way good luck with it:thumbup

What, 'cos the stator isn't giving juice? Or did I miss some more serious development?
No matter, I'll give you £500, be round with a van tomorrow. PM me you address.

No !! I dont want a van although £500 AND a van is quite tempting :devious

dont sell it

theres an engine on ebay with a buy it now of £350......go searching...cheapest way of fixing yours

Umm Not entirely sure at this point in time , there is this rather frightening vibration coming from what feels like the bottom of the engine.
It feels a bit like someones bolted a 21/2 ton flywheel to the engine that just acts independantly to spin on its own.

2 things Kiwi

Do the revs hang if you blip the throttle and if the bottom end is going south there will nearly always be copper in the oil sludge.

You sure it's not coming from the sprag area and it's not flywheel related.
We had a Tuono recently that had a flywheel shear the woodruff key due to wrong/no threadlock and incorrect fitting of flywheel.

Done by a bike shop which is scary to say the least but they coughed for the parts but the crankshaft had to have some grinding etc to sort it. The correct threadlock is quite critical or things come loose.

Hi Spoonz,

No the revs dont hang, or at least I dont remember them hanging.
The oil was changed when I did the sprag , there was nothing "unpleasant" attached to the magnetic plug nor in the filter.

I am neither brave enough nor have suffcient interest in the bike to do any exploratory investigation...............owing to the time & grief it has cost me hence my original post.

chances are you don't have a main bearing failure then which is the usual cause of bottom end problems.

I understand your frustration with the bike but in terms of getting decent money for it and making best of a bad situation you really need to find the cause.

Sold as is will hit it's value big time because any potential buyer has to think that the worst could be wrong with it.
It's your money at the end of the day but it could just be a loose flywheel, loose engine mounts, clutch or even a light misfire which always makes twins sound like they are in their death throws.

You are probably talking £700 or £800 difference in it's value to my mind.

Scott, you've just finished doing the sprag - odds on it's the flywheel loose - don't start it again and get that side cover off to have a look.
You can almost certainly save the oil (drain into something clean) and if you're careful, the gasket too. It might just be that you have to refit and bolt up the flywheel with a bit more loctite on it, if you're lucky. Don't forget to check the woodruff key.

First of all, keep it simple. Could it be a fueling problem? Is there anything in the oil? Eliminate all the simple stuff first.

If it is engine problems, then is there excess vibration/noise? Where is this coming from? Topend? Bottom? Does the bike shift OK?

If it is a pre 04 R model then they are worth a lot more in parts, unless, maybe, you found the correct buyer and the bike was mint.

It pains me to say this, but if there are serious engine problems, then it is much cheaper/easier to drop a replacement engine in. The only exception to this is if you are experienced stripping engines and have fast access to used engine parts.

I replaced an engine when the valves and piston came into contact. One of the valves had snapped and ended up perpendicular to the piston, digging itself in by about 8mm. Its messy. It was uneconomical to repair. I still have the seized engine here, and there are loads of useful parts on it. Sprag, stator, starter, starter gears, gears, clutch plates, casings, good front cylinder head e.t.c. So you see, you can strip the old engine at your leisure and sell off the good bits.

What you really have to do is try all the easy possible solutions, before you buy a replacement engine. It is quite easy swapping engines, but as already said you should inspect the sprag work you have already done.

And if you're selling it with a 'serious, unidentified engine problem' you're basically selling it for parts. Almost any buyer is going to assume that it needs a replacement engine and while you and I might know that you can pick up an engine for a few hundred quid and bung it in yourself, the actual equation to a walk-in buyer works like more like this:
Your perceived valuation vs. Buyer's perceived valuation (remember, while you see it as good condition running bike with a problem, buyer sees it as a 'blown-up' scrapper that might be put back on the road with a new engine); minus cost of good engine from a breaker (Ebay? forget it mate, I want some sort of guarantee) being what, 6/700 quid? Minus the cost of a mechanic to put it in - another few hundred quid, more like £500 from a main dealer? Then take into account (sorry to bring this up) Frankie's dodgy provenance which will knock another bit of 'suspicion' discount off (well, I'll take a chance at 'this much').
Add all this up and my £500 piss take offer doesn't sound so far fetched does it? And all the while, springing that side cover might have the whole thing fixed and running perfectly in an hour or two. Get those sockets out.
