Thought I'd check the throttle bodies and found the front cylinder reading higher but what i want to know is , Do I HAVE to use a gas analyzer as well or not . Other than that its quite an easy task to do .

I'd have thought so.
When Griff did mine with the CO2 analyzer, he adjusted to within 1%....and now she's so o oo o oooooooOOOOO SMOOoOoOoooooooth :)
Can't see how you'd get that level of accuracy without checking the exhaust gasses.

I know with previous bikes ,il4 stuff I'd only used the vacuum guages and it worked a treat . Anyone know why you need the analyzer and is this normal for a twin ?

On the rsv and most twins the rear cylinder tends to be run a bit richer because it has no direct airflow and the richer mixture makes it run a little cooler. If you just use a vac guage you will get it ballpark and it will run probably fine but a bit warm on the rear cylinder as you will probably mess with the stagger. On twins and espeicially on the rsv (even mentioned in the service manual) CO takes priority over vac, but by vac only is not gonna cause you a problem if you don't mind your nads being a touch warmer. You will probably notice the running temp might go up a bit on later bikes as the temp reading is taken from the rear cylinder, on early bikes from the front.

Thanks for the detailed explaination Spoonz , I'll see how it goes as the local shop wants £55 for doing the balance which is a tad dear for my liking . The readings were not to far apart to start so only a minor adjustment was made to both cylinders to 22 cmhg as stated in the workshop book ( not haynes , genuine ape manual ) .
