suspension settings

i believe that diagram is for the showa forks mate, that is the one i was looking at and getting confused over because just off your photo, to the right, is settings which are measured in amount of turns. ie 1 and a half turns out. mine (ohlins) click and couldnt understand why they would give the settings to me in turns. Although on that diagram the little 'reservoir' thing at the bottom, im sure ive only ever seen that on the ohlins ??? confused, but ive set mine to what arryace posted earlier and it all seems tickety boo ...

No that pic is for Ohlins. Showa don't have the external adjuster at the bottom.

All Ohlins R & T forks have compression adjustment at the bottom and rebound at the top as BRG stated. You can debate it all you want but that is the facts. I have the genuine Ohlins manual here in front of me and it concurs with the Aprilia manual.

It's a generic design trait for cartridge forks except some race ohlins have both at the top now.

This is the equivalent diagram for the Showa forks...

BTW, my original pic (taken from the 2006 R & R-F Use & Maintenance Guide) does say ''clicks' for the damping and 'turns' for the preload (off to the right).

I'm confused as to why it is giving me the settings in 'turns' then as opposed to clicks. mine are ohlins but dont have the reservoir bit (they were newer radial forks werent they?)

Just reading back, Smithy-R,

What model/year are you? The only data I have are for 2004+ R & R-F and all the R-Fs seem to have the external compression valve housing. (Mine are stamped FG8903 on at least one of the legs (IIRC, it's on the inside of the fork bottom)).

Just thinking out loud, could it be that somebody's done a non-standard repair to yours?

The earlier forks have the conpression at the bottom also but the adjuster is not remote as with the later version.

Just the opposite in fact!

No wonder there are so many RSVs with handling problems!

my apologies it is as you say i only wish my owners manual said it in such plain english

the settings i posted are correct and are as in the owners manual for my 02 'R'

thanks to MCN for the mille suspension set up guide which states compresion is adjusted at the top.
gona throw that in the bin then:confused

the remote adjuster at the bottom of the fork i have only seen on mille's with radial brakes

so i WAS right then. I'm slowly starting to understand it all. Just need to find a way of being able to work out what the suspension is doing whilst also maintaining concentration on whats in front of me!!
