mate for that money you can pick up an FMX, they use the same lumps as the honda XR650's, bombproof motors, I seen one on ebay for 1800 with 5k on clock, just have to look out for them
If you want sumat cheaper, something around 1200, I bought both of these for under a grand, again you have to keep looking on ebay they do come up every now and again
KLX 650, bit tame but with down gear them and they are not bad bikes, fairly light too
XR 600, check the throttles on these are smooth as the slide inside the carb get sticky and you'll notice a big notch as you open the throttle.
