Super Moto

Thats a lot of money for an old TT600 which has been 'converted'.

TTs are basically XTs with a bigger step in off road direction, in that role they are sound bikes. To SM them you have to fit a smaller front wheel and up the gearing, most people mod the suspenders too. Suspension is crucial, no mention of that in the ad.....

SMs are hilarious, faster on them by far in town and on B roads than on Falco/RSV. I just think thats way too much money for an eleven year old modded field bike. I found a 12k miles Suzuki XF 650 (same motor in DR and CCM SM) for a grand, another for £800. For £1200 there was an MZ baghira, purpose built SM with WP suspenders and XT motor, cracking bike. I'm searching for an enduro/trailie with SM potential, will lecha know if there's anything that fits the bill, let us know what else you come across.........Keep looking and good luck :)

Never knew you could get into supermoto on the cheap. I will keep an eye out, what bikes are best?

i think the best value supermotos out there are ccm 644 duel sports,,

acerbis plastics, wp shocks, suzuki engine,

much better value than the ktms etc which i think are overpriced.... can pick up a 2002 for about 2k but they are few and far between...

or husabergs i love them ......

I had a Honda xr650r which I converted to a supermoto and that was an awesome bike, great off road to and Honda reliability. They can be picked up for a good price these days.

I bought a y2k CCM 604e for 900 quid. A bit down on power but looked great and had a laugh while I had it. Shop around mate there's bargains out there !!

All of those are good choices, the MZ Baghira (the one with XT lump and WP suspenders) is great fun, looks good and capable of high miles. Going down the trailie route like Sharkie is a smart move, basically you need a second set of wheels and sprockets, two bikes in one. A lot of people do that, you change wheels pretty quick on most trailies.

SMs are a fantastic second bike for RSV owners since they cover such different territory but are great for cornering etc etc

Only people who say KTM's are overpriced are the ones that haven't ridden them, when it comes to SM's you can't beat a KTM, you definately get your moneys worth.

CCM644 are alright just down on power, same as the 604 which used a rotax lump which were replaced by the suzuki 644 because the head gaskets kept going on them.

the MZ baghira is alright for commuting, but too heavy to be classed as a proper SM, its basically a big enduro with SM rims, they rust a good un too.

Honda XR650's are alright SM's you can get a decent top speed out of them and fairly nimble bikes.

I would love one of these, love the exhausts on this one.:inlove

This is what someone who now what they're doing can do with a supermoto.

Who makes a big single? Love the sound and should think the torque would be amazing.

I test rode a 690, they are very nippy, but bit on the heavy side, prefer the old 660 smc's.

I've ridden plenty of Katos and loved most of em, but to be fair I also know of people who have had horrendous servicing/repair bills...........re the other bikes you mention, yes they are down on power v KTM but we're talking CHEAP SM, and personally in terms of bang for bucks I'm not sure that KTMs are good used value. I have to say I had as much fun on a CCM as a Kato and I suspect both the Rotax version and the Suzook are more reliable and cheaper to run than KTMs. The biggest surprise was a Suzuki Freewind, very stable and sweet handling, not a true SM and a bit heavy, but cheap fun.

Used: Suzook DR 350 400 650, Honda XL and XRs and CRFs (which make great SMs) Yamaha TT and XT. Kwak KLX KLR. KTM LC4 640, 690. I agree with Senna, I'd avoid the 690 - and they're expensive used.

If you end up with a kick start single, you really have to make sure you test the thing first and kick it hot and cold. A single is great fun and in theory should be simplicity itself, but get it wrong and you'll be kicking the bike, never mind the starter. :angry What I'm saying is, a thorough test is really important, get it right and you'll have plenty of fun.

can't believe no one has mentioned the aprilia sxv 450/550. awesome looking sm which can also be used in trail guise. (rxv). cheap for what you get too.

Because they come restricted to a stupidly low bhp from new and if you remove the restrictor to make it anywhere near as close to anything else in the market you loose all warrenty.. then they just set them selves on fire or blow up!

KTM 525 :thumbup

i was thinking the same thing?! :confused

preety sure i read a review in a 'two' mag this summer about the 550, and they said it was ballistic- 70bhp or something like that?! that one came form a dealers so not sure about the restrictors...? either way, that'd be my pick out of any supermoto - a V twin?! ...YES PLEASE! :thumbup

because the OP is looking to do it ON THE CHEAP ;)

There are no cheap used SXVs because they dont last that long sadly.

Ollies 525 is a good KTM suggestion, I think they're beginning to turn up for reasonable money..............

Mate has just picked up a CRF 250 c/w spare set of wheels for on/off road, the real problem about dual use (two bike in one) is that for off road you really dont want more than a 350/400 IMO whereas the SM needs 5/600 cc.

I'm off to look at a DR 350 this week (£650), lowish documented miles, cheap coz its the earlier kick start only version on an H plate. Lump has the reputation of being one of the most robust Jap singles. Could be SMd if I can find a smaller spare front wheel.

my mate had a Dr Big DR800 SM... mental bike... stripped to the bones & loud as feck !! :devious

Thanks for the replies. There is plenty to choose from. Think I will make it this years mission to chop the vmax in for a supermoto.
