Strange problem?

Hi all!

Haven't posted for a while but my 03 tuono had a cold start problem this morning but did eventually start. Went to town and started on the button coming back, then once I pulled up to my drive and turned the ignition off the starter motor repeatedly cranked over even with the key out until it completely drained the battery! I put a spare battery in and it continued to turn over the starter until that battery was drain, all without even turning the ignition on!

I'm not very technically minded and have no idea what's causing this? Please help!!

Maybe a sticking starter relay ?

Do a search on here I'm sure it's covered. Phones on a go slow or I would look for a link...

You don't want to let it crank over for a long time as it may chuff your starter & a dying battery will fubar your sprag clutch... these twins need a good battery !

:)

Yep, definately sounds like someone fitted a cheap after market starter relay (circular metal unit in rubber housing, just behind battery) from China. They can fail short, which results in turning over the engine...

PS: Modern batteries don't like being left flat, so best to recharged both soon.

Thanks guys! I'm charging the battery up overnight and I'll try and track down the solenoid? Anyone know where I can get the correct one? Like a part number or something?

Most folks upgrade to a 100Amp unit (std unit is rated 50amp), although my Gen1 2003 50A original unit is running fine.

Also...

>>>An oem Yamaha relay is a good option. part no. 4KD-81940-00-00

Be careful buying on eBay as lots of grey imports from China.

if its cranking and not firing, maybe it flooded, common on these bikes sometimes.
crank it with WOT and it will start!

4VR, Felix 1st post said "its cranking without the ignition on"... so it won't be firing!! ;)
- Otherwise you could be right:thumbup

Well I replaced the starter solenoid relay with the upgraded part and it worked fine for a week! Had a bit of rainfall and a colder morning and it done the same thing! First wouldn't start then just kept trying to start itself while I frantically disconnected the battery sparks flying! With ignition off! Also now stranded :-(

Hi, I am new to this forum having had my T for nearly a year. Did you find the solution to this problem as I had it too? I just changed the battery and solenoid but didn't know which it was!

After reading about this same problem too many times to remember I decided to fit a battery cut out switch, I've got the switch and thought about mounting it under the pillion seat where it's fairly easy to get to, of course I'll need a short length of battery cable to link it through. Knowing my luck though the solenoid will weld itself in the day before I've planned to fit the switch
