Hi guys

Have a 02 mille and still having problems starting it ,will push the starter button and will just turn over and sometimes kick in and start and other times it wont and also sometimes you push the button and it turns over once then nothing then about a second later it kicks in and starts but very intermittent.I have just replaced the starter solenoid with the Yamaha one and the battery is only 4 months old and always kept on a optimizer.Getting very frustrated so any help greatly appreciated.

Dave, Before you spend too much time on my suggestions below, read through KZmille's thread in this link and think about the way yours is behaving. You may be able to go right to the problem. At the very least you will have a better understanding of the components of the starter system and the part each one plays.

Starting Problems Trouble Shooting Guide

Hi guys

When cranking the engine over, is it sluggish, or does it spin over quickly?

Either way, take a measurement across the battery terminals with your voltmeter while cranking the engine over. The voltage the battery can sustain under a load is a good indicator of the battery's health. Even though the battery is relatively new, it can fail. Let us know how low the voltage goes.

Is the transmission in neutral when you encounter these starting problems?

If the battery truly is good, this symptom brings to mind four possibilities.

  • Intermittent starter button connection.

  • Bad battery/starter cables. A cable could be loose, or suffering from corrosion or a defective crimp.

  • Bad starter motor, or a bad starter-to-cable connection.

  • Poor connection at the Diode Module under the pillion seat.

Clean all connections...then add a small, but liberal, amount of dyelectric grease...everywhere, even on your ground/earth connections.

I did this, and got rid of a lot of those little bloody gremlins...hope this helps.

Hey I had a similia problem on an Aprilia Future. same (detuned) engine. It turned out to be a relay on the LHS of the engine. There should be 3 or four of them Just have a look at each one and replace it. £4 part in a motofactors

Insufficient voltage getting to the starter will cause sluggish starting. In turn, sluggish cranking will encourage sprague clutch failure.
