Hi All
Following on from purchasing a new battery (Bosch YTX12-BS Kin expensive, it is literally 3 days old.) after my taiwanese copy gave up the ghost, I expected the old girl to play ball and want to start. Which it did with gusto the first time I tried it, left for two days and wouldnt start, battery said 11.2v but wouldnt crank it over. It does have an alarm fitted but is not turned on. Just come to work on it and went to start it 1 hour later and wouldnt start and keeps tripping the dash out to revert to Kmh and losing all me clock settings etc. Help.

Recharge your new battery overnight.Install it on the bike and see if she starts. If it does, stick a volt meter across the terminals and check if its charging. You should get around 14 volts dc.
11.2v is not enough to power the fuel injection and turn over the motor. The clocks go blank due to the volt drop.

Hi Keith
It definitely jumps up on the onboard voltmeter. It goes up to well over 13 volts so I think that side of things is ok. It seems to faulter on the start button then may spin on the next prod, but in that first prod it's had enough drop to throw clocks out. I suppose it could be bad earths, just pissed as thought new battery would cure it.

Sometimes even a brand new batt may be not fully charged up straight oot the shop....ah wid slap it oan the charger overnight like KB says.

Also everytime ye try startin her yer drawin power thats nae bein replaced. Finally,if yer only daein a short commute it willnae have had enough time tae recharge fully so yer startin oan a deficit every time.

So charge her up fully an git yersel oot oan a good long run or two. Then see if problem recurs.

Hi RICO
Battery has been on charger, charged up to about 12.4v. My round trip is about 14 miles. But I tried to restart after only an hour and it wouldn't have it. I'm stumped

First, get rid of the alarm, they eat batteries whether or not they are set, next check the starter solenoid, mine was a bit iffy and would play up when hot or cold.
Big twins take a lot out of the battery so keep it charged.

some people don't agree but I keep my bike on an optimate whenever it is parked up at home - I never have a starting problem

I agree about the alarm system never had one but have read lots about problems from people that do and not just on T's

My battery is a bit iffy and maxes out @ 11.8V.

If I leave it for a few days it drops to about 11.2/3 but so long as it doesn't drop below 11 starts everytime. It does have the beefier starter relay though.

Stickymint I had the same problem a while ago , check your airth wire atached to your rear cilinder left hand side and see iff its lous , I bort a new Bosch batry from halfords swoped out the yusa one to see iff it was that to start with , fownd the folt to be the airth wire , but all so batry wood not hold charge , so put Yusa batry back on evry thing is fine now , it wasent a duff batry for me but will be takeing the Bosch batry back to Halfords , as it is folty , it shows 12'5 across the top , but had it tested , and have been told that it has a damidged cell in it some were .

What is the beefier starter solenoid, don't really understand if this could cause a problem. If so where can said part be purchased.

If your bike is a 1st Gen Tuono the starter solenoid is a bit weedy as standard. You can fit the higher capacity solenoid from the later bike. Its made by Hitachi and also fitted to several Yamaha's.
Aprilia part no.8112927
Yamaha part no.3UF-81940-00-00
Costs around £28.

Hi All
I attached my Optimate to the battery and thought I would leave it to charge a couple of days, but it says the battery is desulphated, doesnt seem to want to go onto charge and just shines a light at me telling me battery is weak. I dont know if me Optimate is fecked or the battery now. Is it rare for a new battery to fail. It was showing 11.5v on meter but all it would do was just click on the solenoid.

Sounds like the battery is cream crackered. If your bike is a Gen1,then the TTZ14S BS is a better replacement. It should give more cranking power, especially now the weather is cooler. Its a little bigger than standard, but it will go in.You just need to alter the fixing bracket a wee bit.

Hi Keith, this is a new battery (Bosch YTX14-BS) Only a week old, thats what I cant understand, its either a duff new one or me optimate is reading funny. I am going to try a screwdriver over the starter relay terminals to see if it spins up, but the battery should still charge properly even if thats duff I would have thought.

maybe it's the optimate that's goosed. I know quite a lot of people who have had them in the past, where they have knackered the battery.
As you say, it should charge the battery.

Have to agree on evrything that Ash says. Had an Datatool alarm on the 998 Duke, drained the battery after 3 days, ripped out the alarm....all ok.
Had intermittent starting on the MV, starter solenoid trashed. Recently the Aprilia would play up. Press the starter, absolute zip, then few hrs later
it would fire. Damn earth lead was faulty. Not to mention the piss take I endured at the local caf meet.

Yer right there Ash.The bloody things go into a discharge cycle if left on for long periods.I also read somewhere that you should short the charger leads out for a second before connecting the battery.Supposed to reset it,or summat.:dunno

Ah,your origional post said it was a YTX12-BS,...:confused
Have you tested the voltage at the battery,....or using the voltmeter on the clocks?
Hi Keith, sorry about that I even confuse myself sometimes, definately a YTX14-BS, Tried multimeter across the battery and read 12v, dipped to zip when pressed the starter and would recover back up slowly. When watching the volt meter on the bike with the ignition on and no activity apart from the lights being on I noticed the reading dropping by .1 of a volt every 30 secs or less, again I wouldnt expect the lights to drain that much so quick (Alarm now disconnected by the way). I did change the lead on my optimate which was faulty so at least its telling me its now charging, so will give it a couple of days to top up and try again now alarm disconnected. Fingers crossed.
