starting woe's

hi all
thursday morning 5.30 am trying to start the bike quietly choke on hit starter turns just fires but i took thumb off button and it did'nt start . try agian and it just turns over .try turning choke on and off nothing ,tried leaving it for a minute or two nothing .curse and swear leave for five or more minutes just about to take car thought one more go and it fired up fast idle all ok . monday morning same thing but gave up and took the car . its as if its flooding .got a rsv can and chip trim things in 12 oclock position . was thinking about t/bodies and co set up poss at griffs or is it me not putting choke on enough its used daily and this has happned three times now , once running all is fine
ideas ????:confused
 
The battery's probably a bit low, get an Optimate IV and keep the bike on charge when not in use to bring the battery back top 100%. If the bike doesn't turn over quick enough when the starter is pressed then they can flood easily
 
how many km's done on u'r spark plugs ????? fouled or over heated plug with cracked porcelain ?? start u'r fault finding with batt, like Legs' says, if it persists, check plugs and leads, over filled oil which perhaps spilled into air cleaner ??? check, check, fix > and on the road again
 
As Legs has said the battery is probably a bit low and this will happen since the temperatures are now falling overnight. Cold mornings are never a good time for batteries anyway as it lowers the current, which is why the higher rated CCA batteries are the best choice. Good luck :thumbup
 
on charge all night ,it was cranking over fast enough just not firing . plugs are iridium ones about 5 months old ,it has started fine past 2 mornings and not been on charge ,pieman not sure on your reply do you mean do i put it on full choke or suprised i do put it on full . i think trying to do it quietly i didnt put the choke on enough as i have been making sure i put it on so when it fires it idles at about 2500/3000 rpm than i put it down to 2000 rpm

Trying to start it quietly :biggrin:lol:lol:lol I can hear your can from down here in the valley :rant Did you check to see if you had any petrol in it :dowhat
 
when i saw your name i wondered what pearls of wisdom there would be yes petrol in it:devious
 
i meant it should be fully open, even in warmer weather mine won't start unless it's on full until it starts then quickly flip it half way and if it wakes my neighbours at 4.30 when i'm leaving for work then i'll point to the writing on my can that says it's 80db and offer them some free earplugs. Could be worse, the car is probably slightly louder and perhaps not quite as pleasant sounding. Have you had this problem with it on full choke?
 
i think it is poss a case of not putting it on full choke decieded no to worry about the neighbours as well ,misses says the alarm beeping away is more annoying
 
Mine will do that too. I have a chip do daa thingy and if I do not let it fire and race on the chokes it's game over.
I have been informed by Southern cross boyz that a power commander sorts this. So I am going to get one soon as.

I HAD to use mine the other day, so I jumped her off my van... Even then it took a full two min's on the starter before she breathed un aided.

**** the neighbours.
 
good its not just mine then
happened again this morning fired up fine 1/2 mile to petrol station fuel in then just turned over .tried it once then left it 3-4 mins tried again with choke and boom up and running . must remember to put fuel in on way home
 
i use my 03 everyday and this happens occasionally to me too. If desperate the ole no choke full throttle seems to get it started but you don't want to be at that regularly.
 
Check your plug gaps boys and the gap on the fast idle screw when fully open (should be 1.6mm),mine used to do this all the time untill I adjusted the fast idle gap and most importantly the plug gap,if its a tad to wide and the engine is cold and damp (this time of year) the spark is literally blown out by the compression,it all looks ok when the plug is out with a lovely big fat blue spark but as soon as you put it back in nothing,mine now starts first time every timebut the fast idle must be fully out then as soon as she fires and settles wind it done to about 2000 rpm
