got the bike on optimate, went to start it and just get a clicking noise getting very fed up with this bike it might have to go, anyone know what it might be:rant

Check your battery connections are clean and tight then make sure that your battery is actually charged up. There have been episodes were Optimates have been connected without being reset and it fails to condition the battery, best way to connect it up is with the Optimate switched off, connect up then flick the switch.

If your battery connections are OK and the battery is fully charged then you may have a duff solenoid. Most likely to be the battery mate TBH, they rarely last longer than 18 months on these monsters.

cheers amb, everything seems connected ok will try a new battery :thumbup

Had the same thing at Cadwell a couple of weeks ago - swapped the battery for my mate's spare, did the day, then put mine back on and it's worked fine ever since (touchwood!):dunno
Gotta be a duff connection somewhere.

The bike is fooked, there is nothing you can do... You better send it to me and I will take care of it. :D

Just kiding(if you are willing to send it to me then Im not). Get rid of the optimate, if everything is oke with the bike charging system, you dont need it. Get a 12Ah or 14Ah battery and a diferent starter solenoid(but it doesnt realy need it)

I dont know why people have so many problems with the batery and complicate with optimate-like chargers, I never charge it, only remove it during winter and the bike is always oke, fires up like a rocket. You only need to charge the batery if the bike hasnt been started for more than 10-14 days.

For now the best thing is, if you can(need a V meter), mesure the voltage on the battery to make sure its not empty, should be around 12.x V - 13v. If you hear the clicking noise you have to seperate what you hear, the pump or the solenoid, it is posible that the starter solenoid has gone puf, if thats the case, hit it with something hard :D a few times, should work, but usualy on bikes this new it doesnt die that easily.

If you do manage to start the bike mesure the voltage on the batery again, should be above 13v(with the bike running), that is how you know your charging system works.

LOL cheers mate at least you put a smile on my face, will get my mechanic mate to have a look and report back. the clicking is the solenoid i think

Im not kidding with hitting the solenoid :), when plates inside get worn you will only hear the clicking sound but it wont turn the engine, if you hit it a few times it will usualy start to work, but its only a short time solution.(hold the starter button and start hitting it :D). You got nothing to loose if you try.

But anyway you first have to make sure you dont have an empty batery. Hope you sort it out (or someone else :D)

the bit about me sending you the bike made me laugh. my v meter said 11.3v then tried to start it made clicking noise and dropped down to 9.5v could be battery like you said :devious

+1 on that. I can't understand a lot of the 'problems' people seem to have with these bikes.

If things are maintained properly : ie connectors checked for corrosion, bike used resonably regularly, and no alarm causing a drain, there should be no need to keep a battery on trickle charge all it's life.

Theres nothing super special about these motors cam or compression wise,an SP1 / 2 or TL or Sv or Duc is much the same and they don't need batteries on constant charge.

I only fire up the Mille once or twice a week just as with my Sv, the only time either one of them sees a charger is over the winter period when they are laid up.

I realise I've just tempted fate now. :dunno

Whilst thinking about it it might be worth doing the following mods and checks.

Remove the brown connector and do the wire mod.
upgrade to the 150 amp solenoid.
and get a 14bs battery

ps dont under any circumstances try and start the bike with a **** battery !!!!

Im sure someone will post a link for the battery.

why shouldnt you start the bike with a **** battery, anyway used a jump pack to start the bike it fired first time seems the battery was shagged got a new one on charge going on the bike tommorow:thumbup

Electrictrickery problems are always difficult to identify.....Mine is always on an optimate & I don't have many problems apart from when the bike decided to revert to Italian mode & reset to KPH & switch the revlimit light to 6k...very frustrating when blasting up the M1 at 'sensible speeds'. Hope you get your issue sorted soon!
