Starting issue

Hello, I have a 2000.5 RSVR that has just over 6200 miles on it. I took it out for a ride about four days ago. The battery at that time was pretty low and I had to attach a set of jumper cables to a vehicle to get it going (vehicle was off). The bike fired right up and the ride was very good.

I have read on multiple forum threads the importance of having a battery tender to keep the voltage up so I purchased one a few days ago and hooked it up to the battery. The hook up involved unscrewing the battery leads, attaching the tender clips, and then screwing the leads back down. The tender clips then plug into the battery tender. The battery was unhooked for approximately 20 minutes while I did this. I hooked the tender to the clips and was in business.

Today was a beautiful day for a ride, so I went out the garage and removed the battery tender lead from my battery leads and proceeded to *ATTEMPT* to start the bike. The tender did the job as the bike turned over beautifully, but would not start. I have never had this issue before, it has always started promptly and it was running great when I parked it. I checked the "tip-over" mechanism and it was where it was supposed to be. I tried starting with the kickstand down and up in neutral, with the bike in gear and clutch in and nothing worked. I tried the "open throttle" method as well but that didn't work either.

I removed the plugs to see if how they looked and they looked good. There are no error codes on the display either.

My question is this: is there something that I inadvertently reset by disconnecting my battery? The tender was on the bike for two days prior to me attempting to start it. The bike has never been down, the maintenance has been good; this is the first time ANYTHING has ever gone wrong with this bike. I was exceptionally bummed about missing my ride; but am even more bummed that I can't figure out what the heck is going on....

any help would be appreciated.

When my battery died I also jumped it from my mate's gixer and it was fine until I tried again but no joy. Couldn't understand why battery seemed ok but had lost a bit of umph since discharging. I called my local aprilia man and he said the battery has to be 100% or you will have problems even if the dash read out is high that can be very unreliable. In short your battery is to far gone my advice is get a new one and plug it in whenever your not using it even in the warmer months.
 
Ok, I will be picking up a new one today and see how that goes. Hopefully that is all it is, because I have had no issues whatsoever with the bike up until now....and it is the stock battery; so that is quite a run for that little guy! Thanks for response. From what I have been reading; the batteries on these things are where everything starts (no pun intended) for any issues that relate to getting it fired up....
 
So, replaced the battery. Engine turned over beautifully, but did not start. Replaced the fuel pump relay, still not starting. Ordered a new fuel pump, put that bad boy in and it started with a thundering roar...man I missed that sound!!!

Although I wish I didn't have go through all that; I do have to say that this is my first foray into doing repairs on this bike and Aprilia made it easy to access critical systems. I had a CBR900rr before this and it was not as user friendly to get to things.

It still is a little peculiar why the fuel pump went out after I disconnected the battery; but maybe it was just the time to go....

So, if anyone is looking at fuel pump replacement; it is not a daunting task....just some time, a few scraped knuckles and you are back in business.
