starter relay problems!

Hi all,

I have recently brought a 2001 RSV mille R and have been loving it! unfortunatley it has developed a starting problem. I have used the search function and i think i have it down to the starter relay!

I have a few questions though, I managed to start the bike tonight by bridging the gap between the starter relay (as read on another post) and the bike started!! i didnt hit the start button though just had keys in the iginition, just wanted to make sure that this means the relay needs replacing and its not another circuit problem?

And by doing this could it damage the system?:confused

Sorry for going straight into a problem i will post pics of my bike and introduce myself later, just really want to get it back on the road, as i haven't been able to ride it all week!

make sure your battery is fully charged and in tip top condition before you go swapping parts unnecessary. check voltage for about 12.4v turned off and above 13v idling

get her on an optimate for a day and see if it solves your problems. RSVs require a lot of juice to turn that motor

I have a spare Yamaha uprated relay for sale if you want it. It's as new and only been on a bike for 2 weeks.:thumbup

my relay ****** up and the only way to get it going was to short across the terminals. A new one fixed it.

Been down that road bro and you definitely need a relay. Get the Yamaha part for sure. It will start better than it ever did before and it's way cheaper to boot!

Hi gents,

I'm having the same problem with the starter relay on my 2005 RSV1000R. Battery needed charged so I did that but when I went to start it all I got was a click from the starter relay, shorted it out and she started.

Do you have a part number for the uprated Yamaha unit mentioned above?

Cheers,

Lion

Do a search on yamaha starter relay and you'll find all you need to know.

Part number is 4KD-81940-00

Thanks for your help Legs. I'm in Adelaide Australia so as usual the part number doesn't immediately spring out in a Google search but I'll speak to the Yamaha dealer in the city.
