I just realised that the Mille has its own part on this forum, so I thought i'd post in here instead of technical :biggrin

Hi,

I'm new on here and sorry for only joining when I want something, I just didnt know this forum actually existed until I did google search!

I'm having issues with my bike (03 RSV). Replaced the battery as it wasnt firing up and only reading 11.8v on the dash, I spoke to my local Aprilia dealer who said jump it off the car with the ignition off to get it started, in the hope of giving the new battery a kick up the *** then ride it to get the battery charged off the bike. So, went to jump it (like I had to last weekend, which worked, then it ran sweet allday) and this time it wouldnt fire, then I had a loud click and now it wont even turn over.

So, the battery is on optimate (as it has been all week), and now it wont turn over but the fuel pump primes, quick search says the solenoid - is this right? If so, if I replace the solenoid tomorrow morning then it turns over but doesnt fire up again, any harm off jumping it off the car? Or is that what may have knackered it in the first place?

Its going into the garage monday morning, but i really really need it for tomorrow, is there any hope?

Thanks in advance!

Kayla

Sounds like the relay/solenoid to me. Pop the seat and listen down there for the click from the relay to confirm. Aprilia one is expensive, try getting hold of a Yamaha 150amp one, part number should be 3UF-81940-00-00. The Hitachi MS5D-191 is also another option to upgrade the relay. You can try bridging the solenoid with a large screwdriver to check - take off the covers on the two heavy cables on the solenoid and bridge across the two terminals with the screwdriver. It's not pretty but it works (make sure there are no petrol fumes around as it will spark a bit), and should spin the starter. If it does, stop the engine (if its started) and stick yer ear as close to the solenoid as you can. Press the starter button and listen for it clicking. If it clicks once, fairly loudly - it's knackered. If you can hear multiple clicks then that's a sign of a knackered battery.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply!

The seats off, its definitely one loud click when pressing the starter after the fuel has primed, will I still need to bridge the solenoid to make sure? Is it best to replace the relay and solenoid at the same time then?

Knew it was dodgy to jump it off the car, but it worked last weekend :(

Hi,

When I mention relay I kinda mean solenoid. Some folk refer to the solenoid as a 'relay'. :) So its the solenoid you need m8. If its just making one loud click then there isn't really any need to do the screwdriver/sparks/bridge thing.

Dunno how you did the jump start thing but it usually does no harm, as long as when you jump start the bike the car isn't actually running at the time. There's enough juice in a car battery to start a bike without the car needing to be running.

Yeah it was jumped off the car with the engine off, maybe the solenoid was just on its way out anyway.

Bikes being picked up by the garage today, pretty sure its the solenoid and potentially a dodgy optimate (its only 4 months old!), fingers crossed :)

You can use a Ford Solenoid.

I had the same problem with a bad solenoid. I upgraded and used the solenoid from a late 80's early 1990's V-8 Starter solenoid. Bike flips one at the press of the button. I ran it almost all of last season with no issues. Just have to do a little research on how to do it correctly. I just followed the step by step instructions. I can't find the exact link. The solenoid cost around $20 u.s.

For the moment i'm having a standard one put on there although I do want to get a more reliable one for the future, do you just swap the Aprilia one for the Ford one in the original casing? I'm just wishing its just that, although I was having starting problems before the solenoid went.

Oh well, atleast its done it now and not in summer

Because your in England, Not exactly sure....

We have a Auto Parts Supply place called Autozone. The Part that I purchased from them was a Ford solenoid the part number looks something like this F496.
I am attempting to attach a link to the store part. If it doesn't work just look up a solenoid for a 1985 F150 With the v-8 option. For a 5.0 liter engine. It has worked fine for my bike.

Please let me know if the link works or fails. Thanks!

There is a rubber boot that goes around the Aprillia original solenoid. That slides into a bracket that keeps it from sliding around. All I did was remove the entire thing and mounted (2 metal screws) the new solenoid to the plastic housing under the seat in the same location, as the new solenoid was slightly larger.

Just wanted to update this, I replaced the started solenoid and it cured all the issues - not only the click and failing to turn over, but also the issues i'd been having for a few weeks trying to start it. Apparantly the solenoid had been on its way out, and the jump starting it made it finally die.

Its back on the road, i'm very happy :)

Quite honestly I bought a cheap one of eBay as I needed the bike ASAP, it is on my to do list to ring AP and buy one from them, the cheap one seems to be doing the trick for the time being though.

Just an update on this, old problems are back after it failed to start yesterday, stuck it on a battery charger all day and it turned over last night, then again this morning. Looks like the battery (only 1 month old) isnt holding its charge at all (no alarm fitted), rang Aprilia Performance today and spoke to Chris, got a few tests to do and hoping its still something simple, fingers crossed :(

I spoke to Griff even, looks like the solenoid again so buying a hitachi one moving forward, having the battery load tested tomorrow just to be sure.

I must say a huge thank you to Aprilia Performance, I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I bought this bike 2 days after passing my test with absolutely no bike knowledge beforehand, its been 8 months now an a steep learning curve, moral of the story is don't buy rubbish solenoids off eBay, they'll only give you three weeks play. Oh, and have a spare bike just in case :D
