I'm planning on ordering some Marchesini sprockets here in the next bit for the Riller. My question is if I go -1 in the front and +2 in the rear, will I also need to get a new chain as well? I'm afraid stock length chain might not be long enough.

Stock sprocket sizes are 16-40 correct?

I'm just getting plain 525 sprockets so I don't have to change the chain, but if I'm already having to change it, I might as well just go with the 520 conversion.

Thanks in advance

Hello from your northern neighbor.
All I did was a 15 in the front and all that was required was a minor adjustment. Haven't done the two on the rear, but I think a new chain is in order. And yes, 16-40 is stock. I understand Aprilia did this just to make emissions, Euro3 and all that.......

Thanks for the info.

I'm actually from Oklahoma; Tulsa actually. I was born and raised there. I'm a student at Baylor University at the moment. That is why I no longer live there, but I frequently visit to see my family.

Where are you located?

-1 and +3 would give you about a total of 5 teeth up in the rear. That is a lot me thinks.
On my Falco I kept the stock front and went up 3 in the rear (equal to dropping on in the front). Needed a longer chain (which was worn anyway). Gearing to me was perfect.

why would you need to change the sprockets am i missing some think:dunno

Yes, basically Aprilia put very long gearing on the bikes as standard to help get them through the noise regs.

At the very least they need -1 tooth on the front, and perhaps 2-3 up on the back as well to perform as they should.
:devious

thanks for that i will be having mine done maybe i get griff to do it for me he only lives a few miles from me

From Tulsa as well, now in Broken Arrow. The Aprilia dealership here is now Brookside Motorcycle Company and Kinetic Playground, right across the street, does the maint. Don't know if you remember Atlas Cycle----Ken closed that place up and retired.

I'm actually a very good friend of the Kinetic playground guys. They used to sponsor me a little bit when I was a little tyke running around doing moto-x dirtbikes. Them and TCS are two very good shops (though I tend to think TCS has gone down in customer service).

I've only been inside of Brookside Motorcycle Co. a handfull of times and the owner always seemed a bit short with me.

I'll have to shoot you a PM next time I ride up to Tulsa on the riller.

Gearing is just absurdly long IMO.

Would there be much benefit in going -1 at the front and leaving the rear stock and can the same chain be used. Also would there be any effect on the speedo at `higher` speeds

Yes I think a standard length chain would be fine with a -1 tooth front sprocket.

I'm thinking there would a good improvement with 1 less tooth on the 'box,my old shape 2002 has just got -1 on the front.

That was just how it was when I bought it,however had I known about such things before the chain and sprockets were replaced I'd have gone with a + 2 or 3 on the back and a longer chain to suit.

As far as speedo accuracy goes Aprilias have a sensor working of the rear hub so they are not affected by gearing changes.

At least the older ones have, mine is +1/2 mph @ 30 and + 1 to 1.1/2 mph fast up to 70 checked against a GPS. Faster than that I haven't bothered checking, but I would think it would be pretty much accurate.

My 00 Mille runs 16/44 gearing on a 108 link chain (which is a little too short and makes the bike a bit "Short wheel base" ) :dowhat

I think 110 link would have been better with that combo :eatcorn

Yeah, just let me know. Until then, Use the tuition wisely. Donnie at Kenetic is great. Brookside was ok until i went to Ohio to buy the Bol d'or, then the sneering started. I really did want to buy local, but $3500 is $3500!:nana
