sprag problems ....gulp!!!

Hey guys,

My bike is suffering from the infamous sprag clutch problem. It's making the usual horrible crunching noise when trying to start, I changed the battery recently but to no avail and the prob is only getting worse. I've had the bike taken to the aprilia garage and they're quoting me €700 for the repair  Apparently I need a new sprag clutch housing (€170), flywheel (€240) and sprag clutch (€70). They're also saying it will take 4hrs to get the job done which sounds excessive.

What do you guys reckon? I haven't seen the innards of the bike myself so can't verify or post pics but do you think that it is likely that I would need a new flywheel? I've read up on this condition a good bit and I haven't once heard of someone needing a new flywheel.

I'll give them a shout tomorrow and get them to give me the Aprilia part numbers so I can be certain about which parts they mean (it wasn't the mechanic I was talking to so maybe he meant the sprag clutch gear instead of the flywheel)

Any thoughts would be much appreciated :thumbup

Can't wait to get the beast bak on the road! riding around on a 2006 cbr1000 at the mo, it's good bit faster than my rsv and better for high speed wheelies but just has no character and the second you start to give it any revs you're doing ridiculous speed. I can see why my bro aint using it anymore for fear of losing his licence haha!!

by the way apriliayorkshire.co.uk are even cheaper for aprilia parts than speedaway.co.uk who I've seen recommended a good bit

hell fire mate thats expensive!!

you should replace all three really as a lot of the time if you only replace the sprag itself it wont last that long but 700 to sort the job seems a little expensive to me , and if they take more than 2 hrs to do the job they need training ........i'd be kickin my own arse if it took longer than that to do the job!!

best of luck matey!!

Griffer!!

cheers for the replies lads. Yeah I thought four hours sounded too much, I'll say to them that I've heard from lots of people that it should take two hours, three hours max.

What about the flywheel though? Could this need replacing as well as the sprag clutch and sprag housing?

cheers!!!

I've had 2 sprags go in the space of 6 weeks first time around haveing got very scared by the cost I got a whole engine off a mate who owns a bike brakers(£250 for a complete engine) this time round we caught it alot earlier ie before it completly distroyed itself and was able to get away with just shortening the spring one of the fly wheels was cracked but that was because of the person that had tried to get it off previously the boyfriend did the sprag with a little help from kiwi and it took no more than 2hours and kev isn't a mechanic if you have the right tools and some good advice its not that hard.:)

bingo, confusion over!! The guy I was talking to in the garage has told me it was the freewheel not the flywheel that needed replacing. I asked him the part number and he told me APO659110 so he must be referring to the sprag clutch (confusing how everyone uses different terminology!!). Gonna get the BMW F650 part instead and save myself a bit of dosh.
They certaibly didn't seem happy with me shopping around but feck em Im gonna shop around if they're going to charge me 4hrs labour for somwthing which only takes 2hours (Needless to say I didn't bring that up with the mood the guy I was tlaking to was in!!) Would do it myself but don't have access to the special tools - flywheel puller, blowtorch etc...

Will let you guys know how I get on, and thanks again!

You will need the flywheel puller - someone on here has one, and may post it for you to send back to them.

You'll also need a blowtorch to break the high-temp loctite.

wow thanks a million for the offer thats really sound! Think I'll leave it to the expensive professionals though, wouldn't trust myself, plus this way I'll have a receipt to show someone when I sell the bike on which could be very soon unfortunately. Apparently the recession hasn't hit Irish bike servicing costs yet grrr!!

I live in the highest village in Ireland, roundwood co.Wicklow. Have the Wicklow gap on my doorstep, loads of twisties perfect for the v-twin :thumbup

Normally, I'd be happy to send the tools to you - alas, a bloke called Jaxgti borrowed them and, despite repeated requests, has not sent them back. I have his address (he's in Fareham) so next time I'm down there I'll be dropping in to get them:angry
