I got caught speeding , 3 weeks ago -- 61mph in a 60 ??? but I was in a van ( vans with no windows restricted to max of 50 mph ).

got the letter thru the post yesterday , either £100 and 3 points on my otherwise clean licence OR attend a speed awareness course .

the cost of the course is with Norfolk constabulary at a cost of £88 for 4 hours worth of being talked at by some condescending old ******* .

on top of that is the absence from work which would be 6 hours 1 to get there and 1 to get back home so that is going to cost me £150 ,

then £6 to park the car . unknown cost of tranquilizers ( to stop me gobbing off at the aforementioned condescending old **** )

grand total , to save 3 points is £244.00 not inc fuel .

so £100 and 3 points is a very begrudging bargain . 1 fookin mph and just cos its a fookin van . system is fookin crazy ,

and to cap it all I was the only vehicle in sight on a wide straight a road and the camera van was potentially to my mind any way illegally placed as it

parked on a very short stretch of pavement .::mad

Yes people who drive vans don't always know it's a different speed limit for a van especially when you see white van man roaring about, that said it's obviously bad luck for you as he must have been board to nab you for 1mph but actually 11mph having done his home work,I have a VW sportline and it's easier to go fast in that than a car but like you say they got nothing better to do than nabbing people for petty stuff,I think the Thames Valley rozzers have done a record 120,000 people for speeding where's the next county didn't even do 10,000 so I will be going to Wiltshire on me bike :yes and the other thing the points and or speed awareness course count the same in most insurance companies view which is another £30 by the time they "recalculated" your policy :no feel for you fella but that's all most rozzers, police are interest in an easy "Nick" bar stewards :kicknuts

Just done the course last Thursday (37mph in a 30) cost me £90 in all , they go through everything, had some oohs and ahhhhs with some of my answers being a biker but there kept clean licence for a while, and have notified bike a car insurances all ok no pens, on database for 3yrs so can't do another awareness until then ?

Did a speed awareness course couple years back. The first thing everyone commented on was the fact there were no boy racers present!! Almost everyone was 40 to 60, and every appearance of respectability! Of course, boy racers are watching for the cops and camera, whereas normal law abiding folks who are just going about there business in a sensible and safe fashion forget to keep an eye out for cameras and get clocked. The system is a joke in my view! Remember just 8 or so yrs ago almost every county backed off issuing speed tickets because at the rate they we going there would be more tickets issued than drivers within 10yrs, and nearly every driver was on track to get a ticket at some point.

Farce... but then the government is spending so much on funding immigrants, and their children back home in their own countries, that they have to get more revenue from somewhere! :crazy

Agree 100% with you having police hiding behind a sign with a laser gun is not a justifiable use of there supposedly stretched resoreses,I never go out of my way for any copper nowadays :thumbup

You have miss calculated.....

Bare in mind you will have the points for 5 years and your insurance will go up by about £30.00 to £40.00. This extra charge will be effective on each motor insurance policy you take out. ie You have at least two one for your bike and one for your van. So even if you are penalised £30.00 each insurance this will total £300 and not including inflation over the next 5 years.
Always go for the awareness cause...

Derek , im in 2 minds about the course .

the van is a works van , but I have insurance on the bike , the car and a camper van . so this is worth bearing in mind .

I,m still bitter about having to fork out the cash tho .

The Police and insurance companies are as bad as each other one shafts you there and then and the other will keep shafting you as a result of the first shafting :no shafting *******s :kicknuts

Tough choice.
Did you ask your ins company if the premium would go up if you got the points?

Don't ask you insurance company anything... Nowadays that will also go on your record and may put you as a higher risk...
I took some time off work some years ago so told the insurance guy that I was no longer employed... Not "unemployed" but "Not employed" this info put up my insurance. I couldn't believe it.
Another time I got an insurance renewal quote from my insurer a month before expiry as usual, but some details had changed since my last insurance. So telling them to re quote with my latest details was a big mistake because they then wanted to charge to alter my existing policy which was due to run out within a couple of weeks.

I went on the cause a few years ago. 45 in a 40. I enjoyed doing it. It wasn't run by a government traffic department, but a private company and was informal and friendly.

I got caught at a lot over the national,103 + (on an A road as well, the old bill put a video up online called "sussex biker dices with death" ! typical police over reacting bollocks) ,got lucky in court no ban but given 6 points and £500 fine(clean licence since 1974 at the time). My bike insurance (speed triple 1050)was due 7 months later, Went up by £6.00 and my pick up went down by a similar amount when that came up,the insurance for my Vincent went down by nearly £30.00 the following year :dunno , so there are no definites with these things.

Gloin, how long ago did that happen?

I advised my insurer (Bennetts) of 6 extra points at renewal recently, and they raised the renewal premium from £108 to £147, so nearly £40 & 40%! Then it's still likely to be surcharged again next year! That said, Bennetts were still the cheapest by a mile! I had one quote at £9,865!

I pointed out that one was for doing 36mph in a 30 limit 'on dual carriageway!!!', and I would now be driving even more carefully as I can't afford to lose my licence, so premium should come down.... (Ha!) but, of course, they don't take that into account because they are looking for any excuse to increase revenue in the cut throat, over competitive (like most industries today), insurance market!

unless asked you are not legally obligated to inform your insurance.

unless of course things have changed again.

Agreed mate! I phoned them twice before renewing and each time they expressly asked if I had any points or pending fines (two different operators). Maybe I should have tried 3x ! ;). ), but got the impression they read from the same script! But like you say, probably best to hold back the info unless expressly asked!

As Derek says, every time there is a policy change they charge £10+ admin fee. My points notification also incurred a £40 increase. I also did a speed awareness course few years ago. It was interesting, but of course fails to mention that doing the speed limit isn't always safe, hence rider/driver discretion is always needed... and likewise, that when roads are dry, visibility good, and no other cars around... it can be equally safe doing higher than the speed limit! But I wouldn't say that to a judge in court! Best to meakly take it on the chin, cos we can't beat the system!!

That said, Britain's roads are some of the safest in the world, for which we can all be thankful.

I went on course about six years ago ,,,a chap took two of us out and for some reason he took a dislike to other speeder in car with me.He kept shouting at him for being heavy with brakes (easy to happen in unfamiliar car)THE FOLLOWING IS 100%TRUE.I got nabbed for 38in a 30,after driving couple of mins he said why are you speeding? I said well look at that 38mph that's what I was done for,he got so fed up after another two times I went over 30 that he reached under steering column and said this will stop you speeding cos I've set it not to go over thirty ,I said well I'm still speeding cos we are in a twenty,,he just shook his head and gave me full marks. Why is this? A because the gov at time were stopping courses (so no job) B he knows that going a bit over limit is human and has no bearing on your driving ability C he was Scottish as am I ,and that connection can make all the difference ( I did steadily lay on my Scottish accent ,which slowly changed from sheep sxagger Lancashire.I sounded like Rab C Nesbitt by the end.I've done my advance since and I'm just lucky as I often creep over limit.Ask Griff cos I was with him and I'm sure I hit a 30mph at about 130mph.So learn that when you meet officials try fishing a bit ooh do you play golf ,I've tried and I'm rubbish ,you're handicap is what? Wow I wish I could be good like that,,ooh you like knitting I love knitting ,very skillful but I kept dropping stitches GET THE GIST?

Ive finally made my decision to take their kind offer of a speed awareness course £88 + no points .

as i pay 3 lots of insurance so the alternative may quite costly in the long run !!!!
