What the fu...****, bugger, aaarrrgh, **** me that wiz scary, ya *******, close yin Rico, Awe no mah engines gone!

Jist some o the things that went thru mah mind when the chain decided to part wi a big bang on the way hame the night!

Roond 60 mph 90degree right hander then open her up on the long straight. Gave the throttle a good handfu then "BANG" and every thing locks fur a micro second, nice black line oan road. Mustve been hittin 70-75 easy. Clutch in like instant and coast intae a handy layby.
If ah smoked would huv had a *** tae calm doon!

Parks her up dreadin worst an expectin tae see a puddle o oil seepin oot below where the casins are awe smashed.

Then relief tae see nae quite as bad but still enough damage tae greet aboot...however ahm mair than happy ah didnae come aff cos o it...could hae been nasty!

Damage count:
front sprocket cover trashed, clutch slave cylinder bashed and scored but servicable, sprocket cover top mount point broken off engine casing, rear wheel scored all way round rim edge where chain jammed on top o swing arm, some minor scatches on swing arm, spacer mount plate between clutch slave and casing bent tae buggery, number plate ripped off as chain whipped roond......

....oh an a ruined pair o boxers as weel! Generally a crap end tae a **** day!

That be a right brown adrenalin moment, nice to hear you came oot o it in one peice and the bike can be put right. Had my brown adrenalin moment last week on Ballater Braemar road involving a flippin BMW M5 and a u turn, nae good, proper **** meself.

That happened to me ... only doing 35mph on a Z550 many years ago ... bloody horrible

But!

Look at the state of yer feckin chain min! Dry as a witches ****y an all rusty as weel ...

Gonnae no dae that by the way Rico ... yer **** lurv deserves sum lube!

Griff scolded me for using the wrang chain lube but yours looks (ed) like a thing affae an auld John Deer

Blimey, what a cerfuffle. You hardly hear of chains going these days R min. Bad luck a reckon.

Nice gold Supersprox chain/sproc combo is the way to go.

Same thing happened to me on my mille last June on the A86 ( arse end of nowhere) on my way up to catch a ferry in Skye.

Saw and felt the chain fling of past me after hitting my boot so was quite lucky ! Was the same scenario tho had just come around a bend opened it up then silence .........was sure i was going to be looking at a fooked engine but got lucky although it did manage to scratch just about everything on it`s way oot .

3 hrs waiting for Recovery truck, all the way back home for new chain then tore my way back up to Portree for a night on the sauce .............long day !

I think If your chain looks F*cked it probably is.

I had one go on me in Brunei. The local bike shop put a new chain on my FZR600, on the way back home I heard this weird humming noise, then bang. Luckily, it went straight out the back and only bust the helmet lock and chain guard. Phoned the bike shop, and got the excuse "chain only good for 60mph lah, you go too fast for chain" then he slammed the phone down. Fortunately I knew a Brunei policeman, so he paid him a visit. Bike picked up a day later, and full repair and decent chain fitted. Had a twitchy clutch hand for a long time after that, just like the old RD400 days.

Good to hear you`re ok Rico. I first thought , how clea that front sprocket area looks and then the dry rollers on the chain. You should know better.

I like to put chainsaw oil on every 2 to 3 tankfuls and then if it looks a bit dry.

I am not too keen on these wax type lubes , It sprays ok but it only hits the surface . Even on a hot chain I cannot see it flowing into all the wee crannies .

I can put up with the cleaning as long as the chain stays in one piece.

You can get some wheel touch up paint on Ebay sometimes.

Yer wrang there Newls min...one thing ahm def regular at is the auld chain adjustment an maintenance. While nae the maist anal about cleanin things wi a tooth brush ah always look efter the mechanicals. Pics dinnae show it as it actually is.

The problem is maist o the lube applied disnae actually penetrate intae the inner parts o the links. The inside o the pins wiz dry as a nuns gusset... a reckon they sticky non fling types are the culprit, looks good on the oot side and **** all inside where it matters.

.....also a symptom o runnin thru a couple o winters as weel.......ironic thing wiz ah wiz oan the verge o chaingin the lot tae 15/42 anyway as the front wiz startin tae hook an the chain hud a tight spot....*******os!

Sorted oot a set DID525/15/42Talon jobbies the day frae the friendly folk at Aprilia Performance tae git me goin so hopefully back oan the road in a couple o days.....in the meantime its the auld and faithful TDM fur Ricos commute.

Whats wi awe these folk thinkin Rico disnae look efter his bike..yer awe wrong...ahm quite hurt actually!

...the sprocket area is mingin, ah hud wiped it doon a bitty while a decided how the **** ah wiz goin tae get that knot oot!

Hec min...as said early post ah lube chain awe the time, rollers will aye look shiny if its used which mine certainly is. The whole chains greasy as ****...evrywhere bar the bits that matter..ie the inners o the rollers and pins.....time fur a change o lube thats fur sure...nae mair sticky stuff, runny is the name o the game ah think like ye say.

.......mmmm chainsaw oil....

Dae ye mean a self administratin chine ile applicator device....micht think aboot that actually noo ye mention it

Bad luck Rico, bet your arse cheeks fairly nipped up with all that going on!

How many miles has your T done? Teeth on the front sprocket are starting to get a little hooked so mebbe it was time for a new c&s set anyway?

No injury? Bonus. I've seen a couple of nasty cuts after a chain went. Or maybe I've just been lucky. Tore off your number plate though, didn't it? **** luck me boyo. At least fixable and Rico-min gets tae ride anither dee!!!
