hello all,

i have only had my aprilia rsv mille R a few days on the road, and whenever i start the bike / revv it at standstill / accelerate hard there seems to be small bursts of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. having been an MOT tester in the past it tells me the bike is burning oil.

when the bike is standing on the stand, cold there is 3/4 reading on the oil level guage, is that too much??? i have heard of oil in the airbox, but i am just not sure.

any help would be greatly appreciated, I.E. sell the ****** immediately or its normal for a rsv.

also if anyone who knows anything is at the aprilia show tomorrow maybe you could come have a look???

cheers guys!

Griff will be there at the show. Ask him.

No it's not normal, If the bike has a sensible mileage and is otherwise fine i would go for valve stems seals have hardened.

Not the end of the world to sort.

ok mate, cheers.

whos griff by the way??? im new to the forum so not sure of names to faces yet dude!

thanks.

BTW when you say not the end of the world to sort, how much? dare i ask?

thanks mate.

Sam mate.......griff is the RSV guru ! ! ! His username on the forum is "fusebox".............if it's not right, he'll tell you what it is, how to fix it and knowing him offer to do the job for you!!! (for a very fair price as always!).

HE DA MAN!!!:thumbup

Griff will be doing suspension setups at the Club day so should be easy to find.

Just ask for Fusebox or listen for someone uttering things like Dude, Buzzin, groover etc.
Can also be spotted for hair like Laurence Llywellin Bowen (however you spell it) and a bit of bum fluff adorning his lower lip.

If you find more than 1 person who matches that description i will be suprised.

Take Jaffa cakes as a bribe. :devious

ok i am genuinly ******* scared now, every time i start the bike there is a big plume of smoke, and i had a full tank of oil this morning, 38 miles on i have a quarter of a tank.

is the bike going to die or will it be ok to get to the aprilia day? also does anyone think they will have valve stem seals there? lol its probably one of those parts you have to order from italy direct, or so i assume.

cheers.

Sam buddy, please don't take this as a slur on your intelliegence but as you are new the the Mille i thought i might add this, if i'm wrong someone will correct me sharpish. But when did you check the oil and notice it was a 1/4 level?? As it can look empty before firing it up or when it's cool???? Just a thought buddy.

Wouldn't worry too much yet mate, rsv's are quite sensitive to how much oil you put in.As you know...too much oil in there and what it doesn't want gets spat up into the air box, this oil can then get into the throttle bodies and be burnt off through the cylinders and out the exhaust.
So before you start thinking about mechanical problems, open up your airbox and have a look first fella.

I was told to run the bike untill the fans cut in, shut off and wait 5 mins and the oil should be about a 1/3 the way up the tube.
Hope this helps mate... :thumbup

i'm with the other guys on this.

using 3/4 of a tank in 38 miles and you would have a serious running problem and probably smoke the local area out.

I'm convinced it is stem seals. Which incidently can leak for years with no major affects.

Classic symptoms of stem seal leaks (usually on intake valves) is smoke on startup from the oil that has seeped past the seal whilst standing and on a closed throttle when the high vacuum in the inlet ducts draws oil down through the seal by suction.

depending on what tools whoever sorts if for you has, it can be done without any major strip down (heads in place) and the valves held up by compressed air.
The seals themselves are a few quid each if that.

Basically don't panic. Have a word with Griff. He may want to see the bike again to remove the Tb's. You can usually see if the seals are/have leaked buy the view you get of the valve stem and seat which will show signs.

ok guys thanks very much! i wasnt aware that when the bike is burning oil it could still be relatively reliable, i thought that meant it was fooked!

ill have a check of the airbox at some point today to see if it is oil in the box causing the smoke. if not then i guess its the stem seals. as long as the bike is not too bothered with burning oil and remains topped up then its a big weight lifted!

also dude, when i checked the oil level the bike was warm. i stood it up and it was reading on the little blue pipe just over 1/2 way up the pipe, which i have been told is full. its now sitting just above the min level marker. ill ask griff if he can have a look today and offer him some jaffa cakes to do so lol

thanks guys, you have been most accomodating.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH

i have figured out what it is thanks to the LEGEND, the one and only griff!!! he really is the man!!!

and a fine reward he received, a tube of jaffa cakes!!! hope they were alright mate lol

its the fookin rubber seal gasket thing on the clutch, i took the pipe off of it from the clutch cover to the rear throttle body and it shot oil everywhere!!!

new seal is £32 instead of a top end rebuild at a couple of 100!!!

thanks dude, you really are an ape guru.

BB1000 helped and all. just got a mention in there!

thanks for ya help peeps!

nice one

by clutch thingy i guess the slipper diaphram has split. I would check the one way valve between it and the Tb's as well as it is likely to be knacked also.

Dude groover! buzzin for ya! ( that ones for you spoonz!)

just make sure that the diapragm is holed somewhere, as there shouldnt be oil behind that part of the engine! if there isnt caution........
Also did you drain the oil and measure the correct amount back in ?? was it over full??

Let me know mate!

Tops meeting ya dude!
maybe a tear up some day??

any worries just call me mate no problem!

Griff

The oil he drained out was black water  so i made him go buy some new oil and do what ya told him :biggrin, it looked like 4 litres that drained out  so yeah, over filled

cheers griff again mate, i will check the old one to make sure it was torn. i have been told you are like a coin machine. blind to the world until the jaffa cake is fed into the coin slot lol they dont tend to last long with me either!

yeah as matt said there did look to be more than 4 litres of oil there, all black and ******. good thing i changed it really. it has been topped up with the correct ammount.

so whats this one way valve in the pipe from the clutch to the rear TB?? is it necessary?

i will let you know soon enough if i have any further problems, i call you and wine down the phone 'its still fookin broken' lol

cheers dude and yeah a ride some time would be ace!
