:confused my side stand seems to have a little play in it when i put the bike on it. I can move it say about 1 inch maybe 2 from side to side(when the bike is raised). is this normal or is it on its way out?

On a gen 1? Not sure. Is that 1 or 2 inches play at the bottom end when extended? Are the bolts that attach the stand to the frame tight? I found mine was loose not long after I got it. I put them back in with loctite so not had the problem since.

Rob :)

Its a gen 2 factory. i have tightened the bolt but hasnt made much difference.

My bike is the same as yours and does exactly the same. Seemed a bit unnerving at first. Hopefully its normal?

Mine's quite "tight" on the 00'....but very "upright", it's scary, I've got to watch where/how I park...it's a pita

My 06 was the same, had my bike bloke sort mine and make sure that the side stand can't vibrate loose either! He sorted it with threadlock bolts.

Get it sorted Ian or it will come and bite you. Will cost a lot more to sort out a scuffed fairing etc than to get a sorted stand. There are a number of possible solutions if you look on the forums.

It's ok though, as in it's not loose, worn, or has play ect, it's just very upright in the design.....it reminds me of the LC I had in 83, I had to watch where I parked it too

The original (upright) design (even when properly bolted on) is PANTS. I think it was better on the US bikes but not certain.

Most people modify the existing side stand, or replace it with a different one, so they can park without worrying about their favourite bike being in a heap on the floor when they come back to it.

It's probably one of the most frequently done mods on the gen 1.

There are many tales of woe on here from those who have not done it.

I've had 2 gen 1 milles and both stands have been the same (lots of play). I've stripped both down and found that the hole within the mounting lug attached to the frame tends to wear/open up slightly allowing the pin that fixes the stand to the lug to move slightly but due to the lever effect it is alot more at the end of the stand.
It's not a problem, just keep it greased then job's a goodun!

They do tend to have that slackness about them, and as stated, it's perfectly normal.
Whilst you're playing around with the stand, DO consider swapping it out for either a US spec stand, or a Fireblade stand (sorry can't remember the year).
Because of the very upright nature of the euro stand, the bikes are prone to getting blown over, or falling off the sidestand when the rear tyre looses pressure.
My bike got blown over, it cost me iro £650 to fix.

An expensive lesson to learn!
