Side stand

No. Must say the only trouble I have is when theirs mass quantities of camping gear on. I always give it a shove with me thighs and pull him up a bit if you get me drift to make sure he's sat proper. Thiers always worries about Prilla stands but most of its common sense.

i didnt even know there was an issue with the side stands ,
i am now paranoid , and will be extra carefull lol :cheers

So my question is .............. do ohlins have to be fitted before fitting a side stand from a different bike.

EyeTye. In short. Aprillia side stands are ****. Both the Factory or R version is ****. The problem is worse on the Factory because the suspension is Ohlins and its a little firmer than the standard, thus when on the side stand fully laden with luggage or whatever, its very top heavy. Sensible parking can alleviate it somewhat, but the stand sits under the bike too much on both versions and it can be dodgy. A CBR stand will fit either bike and be an improvement, it doesnt matter if your suspension is gold or black.

Do a SEARCH on the AF1 forum and you'll discover all there is to know about Aprillia side stands.

Ah, I wondered WTF Ohlins had to do with stands, hence the Mr Kipling comment.

The answer is No.

I believe Gixxer stands are also compatable.

Ride height is adjustabe with either the Factory Ohlins/Ohlins or the R Showa/Sachs bikes, so it will not matter.

Thanks guys, I'll read my ***** threads before sending ........ doubt it

The foot on the standard stand is too close to the centre line of the bike, you need a stand which kicks out more, i have posted with pics the fitment of a gxr stand. After having my bike try to fall over to the left as I got off I did something about it. If you are happy with the standard stand fine until it does fall over. Some people like to mod to make things better, not just to look good, Nobist seems to mod not to do either, but if we were all the same it would be a boring old world !

This is getting to be the worst kindergarten *****-slap fest I've seen in a while... Please continue.

Whats with the random attack on Nobist ???? He's not even posted on this thread. Leave your mucker Aldo to that mate, at least he has humour.

With a standard sidestand fitted to the T and your rear tyre has a
puncture then the bike will more than likely fall over to the LEFT side.

Another stand from another bike (previous posts) can be fitted to alleviate this threat .

Load the bike with camping gear is another story , ie. trial and error , even artic`s will fall over if loaded wrong.

My '03 Tuono has fell over twice due to the sidestand issue.

First time was at work, pulled up in the morning, hour later got a call the bike was on it's side. Had a rear punchure and as the tyre lowered the bike switched weight and fell to the right. Broken brake lever (welded on site:thumbup) and a few scratches to the exhaust.

Second time was on my driveway at home. Same deal pulled up, left the bike out, in the morning punchure and it's on it's side. This time it caught on a wall on the way down. Smashed the r/h mirror, snapped the mirror mount which holds the master cylinder. Snapped the brake resivour mount, popped the rear panel out of the mountings on the rear light, scuffed the rear bodywork.

I'm now looking for a new stand:banghead

Has anyone let Aprilia know about this? Sounds like a major design flaw! If I bought a bike and it was getting ****** up due to a STOCK fitment, then that ought to be retro fitted with something better by the manufacturer. Or ******* else!

They are supposed to be ridden :thumbup :thumbup
Seriously though Shvl. you are right .
Could go for stablizers?? :lol

shvlhead, they do produce two sidestands but we( Europe ) get the match stick variety, the mercans seem to get the good one. Who knows why is beyond me.

And us Canajuns as well apparently. I've never had an issue, loaded for a tour or just out for the day. Interesting though that there is a difference in the standard issue between Euro and North America... Still have no idea why they would pull a dumbshit stunt like that.

I've sent off an email to Aprilia to see what their views are this subject... I'm not holding out for much hope though..

The reason I fitted the Fireblade stand to my Tuono was quite simply due to the problems I had in getting the bike to lean at a decent angle on the standard stand once I had fitted an Ohlins shock.

I have increased the ride height on the shock to maximum and also lowered the forks through the yokes. The problem I now had was the bike was almost falling over it was leaning that much. On the ferry to Spain when they ratcheted it down the front wheel was a foot in the air!

So I fitted the Fireblade stand and problem solved, simple as that. The bike stands a lot more upright and feels a lot more stable when on the stand, I can now park it anywhere with a lot more confidence that it aint going to tip over. The only downside is that the honda stand touches the exhaust as its a bit longer of course, but it's metal to metal and the spring holds it tight against the exhaust so I can live with that

A simple and cheap solution in my opinion and a 10 min job max

Does anyone have a photo (or link to a photo) of a Tuono that has been fitted with a different side stand? Maybe one from a gixxer or 'blade so we can see what it looks like and 'get a feel' for which stand is the best one to go for?
