Should I buy a MPL clutch slave or should I just spend it on something else

In my best Julian clarey voice.

The MPL slave alters the bite point of the clutch also as well as making it lighter and still maintaining the correct lever free play. Makes it easier around town and on quick shifts.

You also probably never sat in a queue at a ferry terminal and tried to get neutral. Your not rolling so you can't use the rolling method. Second, forcing a bike into neutral over a dragging clutch means you are forcing the gearbox to shift with a clutch not fully disengaged and if nothing else that won't do the dogs. bearing etc etc any good long term.
Ever wondered why some Rsv have a very chattery gearbox in neutral and some are quiet.

Aprilia didn't mod it for the sake of it. The clutch isn't meant to drag so anything you can do to prevent it does you and your gearbox a favour.

Ladies clothes off and back to my normal manly voice now :devious
Mmmm, as it's you Spoonz, I'm reluctantly convinced - but only as it's you mind:rant

You don't have to be convinced, it's just my take on it really.

Aprilia wouldn't make a clutch to drag by design. To me it's just sensible to bring your bike up to the latest spec oil jet wise if aprilia have seen fit to do it themselves.
Benelli had a huge clutch drag issue on there early bikes and gearbox problems were pretty common. They had to mod it to prevent selector bending and make neutral a possibility which is wasn't before. I nearly got one so i looked into it quite a bit.
The MPL slave is purely a personal thing if you ride in conditions that require a lot of clutch work or you don't like the bite of the standard unit. It's not cheap so i can understand not doing it but the jet is £7 so why would you not do it really.

Frame plugs - I can get you some but there were not enough for a group buy and a decent discount.
My Rsv is about to be traded in so i don't need any myself until i get another as a rebuuild project down the line.

for me it had nothing to do with the lever effort, but everything to do with having to bleed the crap oem unit every 300-500 miles. since fitted no more bleeding.

I'm a bit confused about this Jet Mod Spoonz, thought it was only for later models. Does it apply to my 01?

Fantastic thread guys!!!

This has answered a few questions and explained a few things for me.

I have only had my 04 rsvr for a couple of months and been out on it a handful of times, one of the first difference's i noticed from my last bike (03 zx636r) was how much heavier the clutch feels.
The other thing that i now see as a problem is trying to get it in neutral. The other week I popped down the petrol station to fill up, pulled up to the pump and it just wouldnt go, in all it took a few minutes. It seems to be at its worst when cold though i dont think it should be that bad. Perhaps it needs bleeding, im just not sure.

Im going to do this Mod and hope it helps, can someone just confirm please that i need to go from a #60 jet to a #40? Do i purchase this part from the american online shop AF1 Racing as i cant find them as a uk site?

Also im putting the bike in for a major service next month, do you think i should leave it till after the service or do it before?

Thanks in advance.

The jet Mod is a good un, and also check your chain tension .

Better still get it booked in for a service with Griff AKA fusebox at Aprilia performance Im sure he will get it sorted for you;

Just get Griff to fit a 40 jet if he's gonna do your service.

If not then you can get them from your local Aprilia dealer, they cost around £7 and are a piece of cake to fit.

Honestly it takes longer to get to the thing than it does to change it.

Thanks for that advise, where is he located? Im in cambridgeshire, was going to get it serviced at my local motorbike shop, they have quite a good reputation and have quoted me 350-400

i might invest in that after market clutch slave, looks good. Do you have to change the fluid and bleed it again after changing?

Thanks

To clear the confusion Aprilia have changed the jet size twice since 98.

Initially they were .75 and went to .60 in late 2000 and in 2006 to .40 .

This jet feeds oil into the clutch basket fed via the sprag/flywheel oil bath and Aprilia found as the years have passed and mileages have got up that this feed was the cause of the drag on the clutch. Oil = drag but also cools the plates so they reduced it in stages. They cautiously went to .60 and slightly modded the basket design to improve the situation but it made minimal difference really.

Having not had a problem over extended mileages at .60 they went to .40 to sort it once and for all and there it has remained. It comes down to overengineering initially for reliabilities sake and cautiously re engineering as time has gone by.

Aprilia have a history of this approach and often discontinue parts and superceed them without telling anyone. It recently came out that early bikes pre 57mm TB's have lower fuel pressure regulator than the later bikes. Now no matter which part number you order you get the high pressure regulator as they found the early bikes ran fine or better with the same part.

The jet is tried and tested by all years and more owners than you can shake a stick at and there is no downside other than £7 and sometimes it's in very tight and it's brass. Buy it, do it and enjoy the benefits.

At last, I understand. Top explanation Spoonz, thanks.

Fitted the Evolutione slave.Needed shimming after bleeding but really lighter and smoother clutch action.Your standard slave cylinder will leak eventually(one seal, piston tips)Evo has three seals in tandem.

Griff!

Could someone help me get in contact with griff to perhaps sort out this service i need doing if he isnt to far from me?

Cheers all

Believe he's in Tamworth. Planning a trip to see him myself as soon as funds allow.
