Hi everyone, I have been speaking to a suspension specialist in glasgow about the snags i'm having on the track with my 2001 mille,
he reckons the sach rear shock is total crap and i should junk it to buy a second hand ohlins unit and pay around £110 to have it serviced and set-up, for my showa forks should be re-jetted,and sprung for around £500..
Is the standard kit really that bad??????? I have the track settings from the owners manual dialled at the moment.
To put it in perspective, I was 5 seconds a lap slower than on my GSXR750.. thats a lot on a 56 sec lap..
any help would be much appreciated... it's not that i wont spend the money.. but dont want to spend that sort of amount if i dont need to, I would almost be better off selling mine and buying a milleR track bike

If it's a short track I reckon a Gsxr750 probably would be faster? What sort of rider are you, do you do lots of trackdays? Was the GSXR standard? Also don't forget your bike is 8 years old, so if you are using it to a high level it would probably need a proper refresh, which is basically what he recommended. I'd be interested in responses to this as I have the exact same year and suspension, but I mostly use mine for commuting and the odd day out!!
 
Stock suspension is good enought for the street and for trackdays.

The real problems is the rear shock, it overheats and it becomes all soft if run hard. So I would recomend the change.

Showa forks are oke I didnt notice much diference compare to oem ohlins forks, except efcorse a lot more options to set them up.

If it tells you anything, someone I know did, on the same track, 1.43s with a tuono(not R) I did 1.53s with my rsv, rear shock ohlins. But I was there the first time, he wasnt. But his time ist still very good even compare to 1000cc l4 machines and he said the stock suspension is fine for him. I will be happy if I will do a 1.45 after two or three times. Other friend of myne on a rsv complained that stock sach went soft on him.

I would recommend that you do change the rear shock if you are gonna race with this bike and also the stock steering damper is not good, ohlins is. Leave the forks the way they are. If you do wanna change them, get the Ohlins cartriges(about 250pounds) and resprung them.

But before you do anything, get the settings sorted, on Italian bikes these matter a lot. And shorten the gearing if you still have stock 17/42
 
Thanks for the replies, my GSXR is a 2002, and suspension is standard, i only really do trackdays.. don't ride on the road much anymore, I was having big grip problems on the rear, was deffo squatting too much on the power.. this seemed to be making the front feel really vague, i assume this was due to the amount of weight transfer I was having as the rear shock over compressed, I think I will change the rear shock and get that sorted.. then address the fork issue if it's needed.

Since putting the Wilbers shock on my 2000 model it's WAY better handling now!! So much so that i want the forks done (See you soon Griff!!) as it showed them up to be really harsh compared to the new shock..................recommend a change at the rear buddy....................:thumbup
