Snap wot Pat says, if you give it an oil change then be careful just fill it right up then put the top on the oil tank start the bike let it idle and watch the oil dissapear down the tube and keep toping it up then stating it until it doesn't move , if youve got a paddock stand do it as i said before but add in changing the gears up and down the box a couple of times and again fill as required ,jobs a good un

lots of riders suggest a 10 minute ride.
i would suggest getting into the habit of checking it at the end of a ride.
when you check it you can do it on tick over or as soon as you have switched it off, if you leave it standing for anytime the oil will drain out of the resevoir down into the sump which will give you a false reading.
