Definately do not use Dot 5 silicone brake fluids in these systems...Dot4 or 5.1 these are the go.

They can be a right pain in the arse eh matey...it should bleed up tho if all components are in reasonable condition and set correctly...bring the caliper up to the seat height, put something between the pads, eg. open end spanner, and have a go bleeding with nipple at the highest point. Set free play in pushrod first tho.

Solution to rear brake bleeding

Hi

I've never found problems bleeding front brakes, coz gravity helps. If you look at the routing of the RSV rear hose, it's got a high spot in the middle, and the caliper looks like it was designed to be the other way up - the bleed nipple is in the wrong place.

My solution is to route the brake hose OUTSIDE the frame. Maybe it looks odd, but it's safe if you cable-tie it out of the way of your foot. Then you can get the bike on a bench, take the caliper off, leave the mastercylinder where it is, and by raising and lowering the caliper above or below the mastercylinder you can make gravity put the air where you want it. Lower the caliper way below the master, push in the pistons, and the air bubbles up to the reservoir. Pump the cylinders out again and repeat. Do that a few times and you're there.

Another mod I've done is to get rid of the brake light switch (put a Hydraulic one on for MOT time - like we use the back brake anyhow), and put a bolt and lock-nut where the brakelight switch should be - you've got a proper adjustable brake lever. The thread is a fine one, but a decent supplier will find one for you.

:thumbup beers on me if we meet up ;)

You do realise you have to do this every other week to keep it working as it fades :biggrin

I can live with that as Ive bled the sytem so many times over the past couple of weeks I can do it in my sleep.

Thinking of contacting the wsb teams to see if anyone wants the brakes bled suring racing in the pits

hehe welcome to the working rear brake club Garvey, as exclusive as owning an RSV :thumbup

Well done Garvey, you won't need to bleed it again. If it does get a little spongy, then hang a 4 litre container of oil or similar off the rear brake lever with a cable tie overnight. By morning it will be back to normal.
