Had a bad experience tonight and wanted to share it.

Earlier this year I noticed my locknut for my Sachs shock height adjuster had split so wound the shock down to the shortest setting (so it couldn't move anywhere) and thought I'd sort it out in the winter:roll
I presumed the bottom of the shock would wind straight out - it was as stiff as hell:cuckoo However, I presumed it was seized.
Anyway - finally got the whole thing out of the bottom of the shock and my shock thread is totally ruined!!:angry
There is a sprung loaded dowel on the threaded rod, I presume its here to stop you winding it out too far. Good idea - Unless your locking nut needs replacing and you need to remove the whole thing.
Trouble is I needed to do something as shock was way to low for my liking and locknut needed replacing.

If this happens you either leave the shock alone or get another one. Yet another example of Sachs being a throw away unit, with a lack of parts and advice available.

Hope I've helped someone at somepoint.

Is it a throwaway unit? I'm pretty sure Griff is sending my one away for a service. Dunno whether it'll be serviceable as it's done 40k.

I was under the impression that they are rebuildable.....it's just that they don't do spares for them :jack

Just what I gleaned from the Maxton info, they also say that they have a very small stroke and so give restricted rear wheel travel (about 75mm if I recall)

That supposedly is another good reason for ditching them and fitting a better aftermarket part at great cost. But then I suppose they would say that as they are in the market to sell their own gear.

the ohlins is just the same , the threaded part of my height adjuster snapped and i stripped it down to inspect it after talking on the phone to a suspension shop who said yes mate just wind it out . same thing as yours a small detent which stripped the threads out of the upper part , if i just replaced the lower part it would have cost about £40 tops just buy the parts now it needs £140 and sending to pdq aaahhh

You are right the unit is rebuildable. Suspension shops in the know (or brave enough) can replace bushes, seals & oil. I should know, I spent over £200 on a complete refurb only 6 months ago! Now the thing is toast - shame as I think the shock works quite well when setup.
