RSVR100R - Won't start - any advice welcome

Hi

I've just got my rsv100r back from a mate. He'd borrowed it for a few years but cant ride anymore so its back with me.

When I first got it back it started straight away and I let it tick over for a few minutes then it cut out (not sure if relavent so thought I'd mention this).

Since then it won't start at all. No idea why. It has a new fully charged battery and fresh petrol.

When I turn the key the ignition test lights all come on including the red immobiliser led in the rev counter. The rev counter needle goes up to 6k stops for a couple of secs then drops back to zero then the ignition test lights go out. Can also hear a few clicks of relays etc around the bike. But when I press the starter button nothing happens - doesn't turn over at all.

I've checked the 2 30amp fuses under the seat and also the 6 smaller fuses near the front headlamp/forks. All good.

What can I check next?

Additional info is tthis bike used to have a Datatool system 3 alarm fitted. But it kept malfunctioning and my mate had it removed but it always worked afterwards and as I say it did start for me when it first returned.

Start with basics if you have a good battery check for spark and if that's ok change the plugs

Bike doesn't turn over so not sure how I would check for spark

Sidesteps light goes on/off when I put stand down/up so I guess this must be triggered by working stand switch
 
Sorry buddy just read all of your post. Check the starter solenoid its on the right hand side behind the rear fairing

I've shorted out the solenoid with a screwdriver with the ignition switched on and the bike turn over but doesn't fire
 
Cool so we're getting somewhere . Whip out the plugs give em a clean. Make sure the battery is fully charged and try it again. Speak to the boys at AP for a solenoid don't get cheap crap from fleabay

The battery is definitely fully charged though and the fact that it doesn't start with the ignition on when I fire up the solenoid and crank the starter makes me wonder if it is something to do with the immobiliser and that's the reason the solenoid isn't kicking in rather than the solenoid being faulty itself
 
Check the plug connection under the seat. When I had mine I got water in this and it stopped the thing starting. I think it's linked the the fuel pump or starter solenoid. It's quite an obvious lead with a white plug in between near the battery. Just my experience.

Tilt switch under seat, check all the wiring where the datatool was connected and removed, is the immobiliser light going off on the dash. It sounds like the connection from the old data tool immobiliser has come apart

yes the imobiliser light is going off

The tilt switch is correctly positioned (can I do a test on it)

I too was worried about the datatool removal. I've found where the wires were spliced in but they all look correctly connected. Is there a particular circuit or wire colour I can check?

I would start and work my way back from the starter solenoid. There are usually three circuits interrupted by datatool. Two of which will be the starter motor and the fuel pump

cheers. I've got a 12v feed to the solenoid and to the starter button so I'm guessing the whole thing works by some kind of earth connection. but what wire do I folow from the solenoid (I guess the non 12v one) and where do I follow it to?
 
Ok one side will be the switch or starter side. Check that when you press the starter button you are getting feed to the starter solenoid. The other side of the solenoid will be to ground. There is a heavy feeder to one side usually from the battery and the other goes to the starter. If you have power to one side that's good. Now short it out if that turns the starter then you will know where the fault is. I see you're in Roscommon. Get on the Facebook page there will be someone local who can help. sorry I wasn't very clear. I wasn't talking about the big power cables from the battery and to the starter.

I'm talking about the two small wires into the solenoid that cause the solenoid to join the two big cables. One of these smal wires becomes 12 volts when the ignition is switched on but I expect the other one is grounded by the starter switch in some way
 
Nope it should just go to ground. There will be a plug connector 2 pin I think. One connector will be your starter side the other should be ground
