hi,i have an 99 rsv,i just bought it with the sprag clutch gone,so i replaced it with a new one,the bike starts when i hook it up to my van with the engine running,it wont start of the battery or a jummper box,it seems like it drains all the power to swing the engine, the jummper box should start it eassily,i dont know whats up,any help is much appreciated,i neverhad an rsv before am i doing something wrong, the sprag clutch seems fine no unusural noises or anything,?just seems to take high voltage to get eneough power to swing it a couple times to starr it,the jumper box swings it a little and then drains the power,

More than likely a duff battery and a knackered starter solenoid. You need to search for battery and starter solenoid on here and see what batteries and starter solenoid you need to buy.

Replace both as that's most probably what damaged the sprag clutch assembly in the first place.

PS. Stop starting it with a dodgy batter/starter solenoid, you'll end up fitting a new spag in no time at all.

Best to search for the correct starting procedure too, invaluable advice to new owners.

I agree with AMB, check your starter solenoid, do a search on "Yamaha solenoid".

Again i would also suggest buying a new YTX14BS battery and an Optimate 4 battery conditioner.

Poor batteries and duff solenoids are what kill the sprag clutches

Welcome mate. The above advice is what you need to do first. Hope you get it sorted.

i thought it might be the solenoid, from what i read i understand the yamaha solenoid is better,is it an r1 solenoid or do any of ye have a part number,i got the part number for the aprilia solenoid, but would like to get the better one if i can.
i do agree i think it would mess up the sprag again, seems to be putting fierce preassure round that area

Do a seach as i've said fella, there's loads of threads on this subject, but here's the yamaha part number anyhow 4kd81940-00 and no it's not an R1 solenoid. Don't forget to buy a new battery too or you'll be back to square one again :thumbup

It's the solenoid of an old XT as I remember - just give the part number to your local Yam dealer or get one off the net.
