RSV or RSVR?

Hi all, new here so i thought id start with a question! In feb im going to be getting a new bike, currently i've got a ZXR750 and a CRM250 trails bike. As im going back to all year round riding (none of this poncy car rubish any more) so i quite fancy somthing new...

I've narrowed my choices down to RSV or a TLr (would love a SP2 but to expensive to buy). Will be around 2000 odd model.

But my question is if i go RSV is it worth getting the 'R' moddel? there not that much more to buy but i'll be paying an extra £400 on my insrance :O (mille is £500, 20, 4 years ncb, tpft)

Also how dos the bike cope with things like snow, road salt and rain? what sort of mpg can i expect?

You will get some extra bells and whistles such as Ohlins suspension, Oz wheels etc...BUT for the extra insurance cover that doesn't necessarily relate to any extra performance. Would suggest getting a good quality RSV and looking at aftermarket changes when/if you feel the need....You won't be disappointed!
 
mate go for and R purley because you get all the ohlins etc.... for the extra £400 and as most people who don't. find they try get ohlins after find its to expensive. (not me don't want ohlins to common!) TL is not even in the same league and neither is the overpriced sp2 with terrible fuelling and underpowered /small tank range aswell(never beaten a mille in a test yet).
riding all year round is not a problem i do that myself have put 23,000 miles on mine in last 2 years not a problem . had a zx9r before the mille and in winter couldn't go far as carb icing set in after a couple of mile and the mod for it didn't do alot either calipers used to seize on the zx regularly aswell. just clean your bike down after use shouldn't have any dramas:thumbup
 
Go for the R model everytime if you can afford the extra. Take your time in finding one though as there are some used and abused examples out there. A well looked after Mille should be in A1 condition with full dealer service history.

Well, that ones up to you. You're buying a hypersports race bike here, but yes you can use them all year round but you'll need to clean it regularly, keep it hooked up to an optimate and love it do death. Expect around 40 to 45 mpg if commuting, less if you're having a blast.

Read as much as you can about them and what to look for when buying one.

cheers for the info guys! Im thinking i should pay the extra for the R really as i do a few trackdays every now and then, im also planning of heading over to spain for a few weeks to enjoy there perfect twisting roads! so the extra ajustment would come in handy!

@rs3 mille: How did you find the power coming from the 9r? my zxr is putting out about 120bhp (i like to fiddel), the extra torque of the twin is what i really want but will it still cruise at 110 quite happly or is it going to be like riding a dildo and get vibrated off the thing?
 
just remember ohlins(leaky0 forks and shocks need regular maintenance and servicing espescially if you use it in all weathers and do over 12k year.

what sort of maintence is that? im fine with replacing forks seals ect but im guessing its a send the rear shock off to be rebuilt job?

also how do the caliper pistions stand up to road salt? the origanals on my zxr (before placing them with gixxer 6 pots) used to seize up very easly, drove me crazy taking them off and cleaning them up every 2,000 miles or so

rene its different in the way it delivers the power (most milles averaging 135bhp at the REAR WHEEL NOT CRANK AS THE JAPS LIKE TO TELL YOU) at first i thought the mille felt slower (because of the noise no screaming inline 4) (not a chance). i knew the handling and brakes were so much better to say on a different level to be honest than th zx 9 and even though the mille is big its easier to throw around than the 9, before that i had a zxr 750 L1 again was rev happy to get it moving and you will find a big difference and more confidence on the mille and point to point no finer weapon! my friend had a r1 when i had my zx9 and struggled not on speed but corners to stick with him , soon as i bought my mille a couple of months down the line he doesn't come out anymore as he is absolutley nowhere to be seen in the twisties with the pure grunt on the mille out the corners he couldn't even keep up (some friend) once you learn how to ride the mille you'll never go back to a il4 ask most people on the forum YES there are faster bikes(zx10 hayabusa etc but only top speed) but no way as much fun. they are abit vibratey but trust me you won't even notice after a while.:thumbup

Cant help much on the techno side as I'm new to Vees too :inlove mines just a milleRSV but the way I ride I wouldn't benefit from the better Ohlins suspension as mine in just great as it is...for me.

At the end of the day if you think you are a good enough rider to get the best out of a R model then go for it but at the end of the day it takes a good person to be able to set the bike up in the first place to get the best out of it and then to ride it to it's full potenial.
 
I'm with Sharky, don't think buying an R model is worth an extra £400 a year insurance. Unless you're a track god you probably wouldn't notice any difference except pub bragging rights......... is that worth £400 to you ???
 
400 quid is only 400 quid though... The ohlins is a better shock than the sachs by far and I dare say the forks are better too. I must admit I did get the std mille, but then blew thousands tricking it up.(arg) Mind you I didnt bother doing the ohlins forks just the rear shock(which is WAY better than std), but i did need it servicing fairly quickly which is 150 quid(ouch) they usually are about 250 s/hand on bay of fleas.Pukka race gear dont like wet roads, corrosion etc.

Welcome from Spain. Go for the R with no doubt, better compos, it's a good investment
 
resently learned this lesson:
listen well to the blokes here...but at the end of the day get what you want based off of your financial situation, your personal likes/dislikes, your personality, and for the exact reason you are going to use it...
then make it yours...to be honest, it doesn't matter what you get as long as YOU are happy with the purchase...if you can notice a difference in the ride between the RSVR and the RSV (i can't...but then again i do not have the experience that many others here in this forum have) then that will factor in as well...for me, i just can't fathom the gold frame (i live in the U.S. and it looks to "bling, bling" and "show-ee" for my personal taste...) then again, the gold frame may fancy well with you...

hope to NOT confuse you...but i just went thru the entire dilema...and i will have my bike in a few weeks...i opted for the standard rsv and then added my own flare the way that I want it...

good luck!! the fact that you are getting an aprilia means that you ALREADY made a great choice

That's probably is a little optimistic on rear wheel bhp to be honest Rs3. True rear wheel hp for standard bikes would be something as follows

1998 to 2000.5 model RSV Mille and R 110 -112 Bhp
2000.5 to 2003 RSV Mille and R 114 - 116 Bhp
2003.5 to 2005 new model RSVR and Factory 120 -122 Bhp
2006 to present new model RSVR and Factory 123 - 125 Bhp

Now with open race cans, full systems, PC3, map changes and airbox mods, these HP figures can be improved but most the most gains are to be found in the mid range torque and bhp figures.

i wish i could afford the Factory R (only one with gold frame i think?) but no way will my budget stretch to the new shap RSV :(

The RSV was the bike that got me into riding when i was 15, i've always dreamed over them and always known im going to own one! Think im going to go with the R, the better suspention is going to suite what i use the bike for (apart from the commute but i might get a GS500 ect for that).

Just need to make room in the garage now, getting about packed out with 4 bikes!

SORRY legs you right for standard bikes, i'm on about most people get them remapped /chipped airbox/ exhausts etc i didn't mean STANDARD bikes as most people dont keep them standard do they?
