Hello to all the peeps on this forum,
I was wondering if i could get any advice for my 01 rsv mille r, i was plodding along merrily yesterday (sunday) and for no reason the bike just cut out !! i pulled over switched off, switched back on and she started up no problem...
Then i was heading home about 2 miles away and she cut out again, only this time she would not start up again, hence that cost me in walking and pushing the bike home, i noticed that when i tried to re-start her she would only turn a few times but not continually turn over, it wounded like the starter was stalling.

So i got back home checked plugs, connections etc, nothing wrong there, checked the solenoid no burnt wires etc. Put charger on and left her over night. This morning i checked ampage and it was fine, so i tried to start her, and she kicked up first time, i then ran her about 4 minutes getting temp up and checking voltage she then cut out again and wouldn't start for a minute, then she started and ran fine, i ran her up to 80 degree's watching if than fans cut in, and they didn't so are the sensors faulty or something?
Id put in a full tank of fuel so i know i had not ran out of fuel.
Any advise will be welcomed..
Stuart.

I seem to remember my fans didn't kick in till about 95 c ? I've not had the bike for a couple of years so i may be wrong ?

yeah about 95 on mine two. sounds like a sensor to me have you tried plugging in the diagnostic cable to check for error codes?

Same thing happened to mine. Turned out to be the sidestand cutout switch. I wired it out (wire bridge) so it doesn't cut the engine out but the light on the dash still works to remind you the stand is down.

Yes i charged battery up for a full 8 hours, and it started first time.. If it was the side stand it would still allow you to start in neutral.. Ive checked this morning straight from work and battery is fine and held it's charge, its taken the wind out my sails as now i dare'nt go for a long ride just in case this re-occurs, ive thought about taking battery for proper test and changing the plugs etc just to be on the safe side, then i guess its the rule of elimination...

After it cuts out check for the noise of the fuel pump priming, I had a very similar problem with a faulty pump. The fans on my Tuono kick in at 95c

I'm appreciating your advice guys, but im at my whitt's end now, yet again i had the same sinario, went to work she ran beautiful no hitches, a pleasure, came home 2 miles away and she just stopped and would not start, called RAC out 3 hours later home, they couldn't even tell me what the problem was, he checked all relay's and battery, said they were fine, when you leave it alone 10 minutes then try to start she turns but does not fire, so now im thinking either into dealership or maybe it could be plug's...

Pete does that have anything to do with the running problem as side stand is up all the time? i called an aprilia dealer and he said it sounds like main icu brains need replacing, i laughed as i know its something small yet hard to find, it always cuts out at low speed not fast speed..

Although I'm not sure whether speed would affect the operation of the sidestand cutoff switch, if the switch itself is faulty (as it was on mine), the cutoff switch will still cut the engine whether the stand is up or not. You may have an intermittent fault with the sidestand cutoff switch, or just as likely, it may be something completely unrelated.

I appreciate that this doesn't tell you what the problem is, but if you bypass (if only temporarily) the sidestand cutoff switch, you'll at least know what it isn't.

Bypassing the sidestand switch:cutting out problem solved at last!!

Remember that if you do bypass the sidestand cutoff switch, you'll be lucky not to accidentally set off with it down at least once.
I've done it twice, and both times were unpleasant enough to make double and triple sure that the thing's fully up before I set off now.

Thanks pete i agree, it's the elimination process, i will do this even if its just to rule it out. Tried bike tonight, started first bloody time ahhhhhhhhhhh...

Hi again peep's, i did take the liberty of checking the stand sensor and it was completely caked up in grease oil and bit's of road grit, and it was a bit loose, so i removed the outer cover and the middle wire green, was just hanging on, so what ive done is removed all wires, and now will see if that cures anything..
I also had all side fairings off, and checked all connectors, i found one on the brake lever side was not sitting fully on, so i made it steardy and fitted correctly. So watch this space and fingers crossed it has cured my problem...
Thanks guys for the input :thumbup

Hi guy's, just a quick update for future bikers in the case of cutting out.. The bike after all the checks and replacements carried on being an ***, i put new side stand sensor on, new plug's, and checked the alarm, it turned out to be datatool alarm, and the fuel pump, so today i had both checked out by an electrician and they were both faulty, :jack so i had 2 issue's not one, i tapped the fuel pump and waa haaay :doug the pump started working, and the bike kicked up first crank. So the datatool alarm is now in orbit, and fuel pump on order.
The electrician said that the datatool was a common fault with all bikes and 90% of his call out's was alarm related... So maybe datatool should take heed of this.. Any ideas into a good replacement alarm unit? preferably CAT 1 ??? :thumbup

Glad you got to the bottom of the problem mate, to be honest you will probably find most people on here are not the biggest fans of bike alarms they seem to cause more hassle then they are worth.

I have a similar problem but when I turn it of and back on again at the key she fires back to life but will do it again after a few mins..
The bike rides perfect one I get out of 1st gear...
I have bypassed my side stand switch

Side stand switch for sure!!!!

Mine was exactly the same, had to call for recovery and they turned up and it was fine!
